The 2012 Tin Pan South annual celebration of songs and songwriters begins today, Tuesday, March 29 and runs through Saturday, April 2. The Nashville Songwriters Association International, which created and produces the five day event, pays homage with the festival’s name to New York’s fabled Tin Pan Alley, while acknowledging the Nashville music community’s claim as the current “home” for songwriters of all stripes. This year’s 20th Anniversary edition features over 350 songwriter at 90 shows in 10 venues.

While the event wide Fast Access passes are sold out individual show tickets will be available at the door ranging from $8 – $20. This year’s shows take place at The Bluebird Café, Douglas Corner Café, Commodore Grille, eat at Loew’s Vanderbilt, Belcourt Taps and Tapas, Hard Rock Café, The Listening Room, The Rutledge, Station Inn and 3rd & Lindsley.
Current and former Middle Tennessee residents/pop stars Amy Grant, Janis Ian, Michael McDonald, Donna Summer and Peter Frampton have participated, as well as songwriting legends Art Garfunkel and Carole King, and rockers Eliot Sloan (Blessid Union of Souls), Bill Champlin (Chicago), Jonathan Cain (Journey), Kyle Cook (Matchbox 20), Kevin Griffin (Better Than Ezra), and Phil Collen (Def Leppard).
In this year’s “legends” category are Peter, Paul and Mary’s Peter Yarrow (“Puff, The Magic Dragon”) and Songwriters Hall of Fame members Paul Williams (“We’ve Only Just Begun,” “Evergreen”) and Jimmy Webb (“Wichita Lineman,” “MacArthur Park”). Dierks Bentley, Victoria Shaw, Gary Burr, Jim Lauderdale, Marc Beeson, Marcus Hummon, Larry Gatlin, Tracy Lawrence, Mark D. Sanders, Steve Bogard, Marty Dodson, Jim Photoglo, Tony Arata, Thom Schuyler, J. Fred Knobloch, Angela Kaset, Stephony Smith, Darryl Worley are among the many talented tunesmiths playing in this year’s festival.
