When was the last time you looked at your LinkedIn profile? Better yet, when was the last time you took the time to revise it? If you are like most people, you create it and then forget about it. Follow these easy tips to optimize your LinkedIn profile and increase your chances of being found.
4 Tips to Beef – Up Your LinkedIn Profile:
1. Customize your professional headline. By default Linkedin will list your current job title. Instead, customize your professional headline and make it interesting with your ‘5 second bumper sticker’. Show how you can help someone or state your value proposition. Jason Alba, author of ‘I’m on LinkedIn Now What???’ uses this catchy headline, ’Organize your job search, own your career! It’s all about relationships – www.Jibberjobber.com’.
2. Write a compelling summary. Rather than simply pasting your resume, tell your story instead. Make it conversational by including success stories to engage your audience. Always write in the first person to make your summary more personal. If you are conducting a job search make sure you list both your full name and your contact email address at the very top of your summary so recruiters can easily find you. A recent change to visibility of 3rd degree contacts makes it essential that you provide this information!
3. Post status updates regularly. If you are in between jobs this is a good place to ask about job opportunities in your field. Post something like…”Looking for a Supply Chain Management opportunity in the health care field in the SF Bay Area…who do you know?” Or, share a link to an article in your field. Comment on others’ posts to start a dialog with them.
4. Get Recommendations. Set a goal of obtaining at least 5 recommendations. Only ask for a recommendation from someone who can give you a real recommendation. This means the person has observed you making a solid, results – oriented contribution at work. Make it easier for the person recommending you by suggesting areas to discuss (i.e. how you launched a successful advertising campaign that increased sales during a downturn economy). And reciprocate by offering to write a recommendation for them.
If you are conducting a job search, it is essential that your LinkedIn profile be 100% complete. Having a complete profile will improve your chances of being found by recruiters and hiring managers. Follow us on Facebook and Twitter.
