Can you hear that tinny squeaking? That desperate, barely audible cry for attention? It’s just a little cheeping sound, like a tiny, baby pigeon that fell from its nest and ended up on the loud, noisy streets of the mean city.
Somehow lost in the cacophony of orgasmic exultation for the recently-released MMO, Star Wars: The Old Republic, and the near-breathless panting of hordes of gamers yearning to find true MMO happiness in either Diablo III or Guild Wars 2, you might have heard just a tiny squeak of anticipation for The Secret World.
No? Never heard of it. Not surprising. Did you think SWTOR was innovative? Do you expect Guild Wars 2 to re-invent PvP? Are you just plain excited about Diablo III? Hmmm. You know, you might want to check out The Secret World.
The Secret World is latest MMO project from Funcom, the creators of Age of Conan and Bloodline Champions. If it can deliver on its many promises, it will crush the tired, old MMO formula. That’s plenty of reason you really need to be excited about this game, but here are 5 more, just in case:
1. There are 3 factions.
Nearly every MMO allows you to play one of two sides: The Alliance or the Horde; The Republic or the Imperials; the goody-goodies (Supposedly.) against the evil-doers (Supposedly.). It all gets a tad boring and, worse yet, in PvP, one side usually ends up dominating the other. (Yeah, it’s typically the baddies. It’s more fun being bad, isn’t it?)
The Secret World will have 3 factions, the Illuminati, the Dragon and the Templars, “…each stand united in their war against the rising darkness, but divided in their pursuit for power.” Come on. You know that sounds cool.
Three factions will help prevent server imbalance. If one faction rises to prominence the other two will simply team up to bring the more powerful faction down a notch or two. Besides, isn’t it just a lot more fun to have more than two sides to choose from?
2. The story.
If SWTOR has demonstrated anything, it’s that gamer appreciate and even desire a strong storyline. A good story helps immerse players in the game, creating a sense of actual involvement in the MMO world.
The Secret World promises a world steeped in lore and mystery, a world “…featur[ing] a unique, story-driven gameplay experience that explores the myths, legends and conspiracy theories of the real world.”
“The Secret World brings MMO storytelling to a whole new level by putting you and your friends smack in the middle of an exciting, overarching storyline filled with memorable characters and unique missions never before seen in a game of its kind.”
3. An end to grind.
The Secret World promises to do away with grind quests, giving players meaningful quests. They promise missions with a purpose.
The optimist in you wants to believe, but the pessimist knows a lot of games have promised to do away with grind, but haven’t. If you’re a half-empty kinda gamer, maybe it’s okay to remain skeptical about this one.
4. No classes and no levels.
Let’s say that, again. No classes and no levels. Are you done shaking your head, yet? Kinda mind boggling, isn’t it?
The Secret World promises “…[t]ruly freeform character customization…” “You can acquire powers within anything from firearms to destructive magic, mix and match anything, or choose to specialize in a certain direction.”
Just the possibility of breaking the tired tank-healer-dps mold is reason enough to play this game.
5. Be who you want to be.
There are hundreds of different style options for your character, hundreds of weapon and powers. You get to style your character however you want.
“You can pick up new pieces of clothing through missions or battle, or you can visit the shops in London, New York or Seoul and dress up your character any way you like.”
Being able to create your own look and style is one of the reasons people love MMOs. They’ll run a dungeon a thousand times on the offchance a certain piece of armor will drop, just so they can strut around the city looking awesome in their new chest piece.
Really, all anyone wants is to look cool. The more options to look cool, the better. Maybe The Secret World will help you find your inner Heidi Klum.
The Secret World’s release date is June 19th, 2012. You can also sign up for the beta at The Secret World.
