“Let my beloved come to his garden, and eat its choicest fruits.”
~ Song of Solomon 4:16c
Who is your Beloved? If you claim to be a Christian, then Jesus Christ the Lord can be your only answer. And where is His garden? His garden is your heart; your very soul, in which He purchased and saved with His precious blood (1 Cor 6:19-20).
As Jesus’ disciples, we should do all things with Him in mind—for His glory and pleasure alone. Because our hearts are gardens for Christ, we should be diligent about cultivating His fragrance of humility (Philippians 2:6-8), which is a natural defense against the weeds of pride that cause us to become unfruitful.
“The genuine Christian must seek to be more excellent in his life than the best moralist, because Christ’s garden ought to produce the best flowers in the world.”
~ Charles Haddon Spurgeon
Our lives should flow with the love of God and the magnificence of His grace and mercy. They should shout, “I am holy, set apart; for the LORD!” The way we eat, dress, talk and what we choose as forms of entertainment should all declare that though we may still be in this world, we are not of it and our hearts are not given to the deceitful “pleasures” of the flesh (2 Tim 2:22).
We ought to be singularly focused and eternally inclined. Just like the flowers in our garden, our hearts should only seek the face of the Son. We ought to stretch our faith and strain our efforts to have a leaning only towards the One who gave His life for us (Gal 2:20).
God the Father is the perfect Gardener. He plants us where He knows we will grow best and uses everything in our lives to conform us into the image of Christ—for Christ (Rom 8:28-29). God knows we need large, daily exposure to the Son so we’re able to bear His fruit in every season (Col 1:10; 2 Tim 4:2). And the Lord has made His word available to us; therefore, we have no excuse when our garden looks more like a hollow grave rather than a lush field of vibrant fruit.
What’s growing in your garden/heart today?
“Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on His law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.”
~ Psalm 1:1-3
