This coming Sunday, April 29 will be the 20th anniversary of the Los Angeles riots which stirred the city back in 1992. The uproar or civil unrest occurred after the exoneration of four LAPD officers involved in the Rodney King beating. The unrest sparked widespread looting, assault and arson. In all, 53 people died, thousands more were injured, and property damage topped $1 billion dollars. This coming weekend Company of Angels, located in the heart of Downtown Los Angeles at the historic Alexandria Hotel, will present a theatrical perspective on the riots to shed light on the legacy of 4/29/92 with their latest production, L.A Views V: April 29, 1992. The production features 8 short plays that were written in Company of Angels’ Playwrights Group by Gabriel Rivas Gomez, Jonathan Ceniceroz, Julie Taiwo Oni, Malik Burroughs, Mayank Keshaviah, Michael Patrick Spillers & Nic Cha Kim. From business owners to looters, newscasters to people trapped in the darkness of it all, this diverse, theatrical interpretation of the events of 4/29/92 features a cast of 19 actors performing these stories.
This production is Company of Angels’ Playwrights Group’s 5th production in their “L.A. Views” series, which was launched in 2008. It embraces a different City of Angels theme each year with previous “L.A. Views” productions exploring the concepts of hunger, gentrification and the wanting of community, as well as the famous former residents of Company of Angels’ home at The Alexandria Hotel.
The show runs April 28 through May 27, 2012, with an opening night celebration this coming Saturday, April 28 that includes a post-show reception with the cast and crew. All tickets for this opening night are $25. General admission after opening night is $20 with discounts available.
