America’s Next Top Model is back, and Tyra is changing it up, inviting seven former contestants from Britain’s Next Top Model to compete with seven hopefuls from the US in Cycle 18.
As we meet the girls, we can see there is going to be camaraderie between the girls of each country, as chants of “USA! USA!” echo from the US girls, while the UK girls rolling their eyes at the Americans, thinking they’re just too loud.
The cast is introduced to a large crowd of fans at Universal’s City Walk, with one girl from each country paired off in a runway pose-off, playing to the crowd.
Backstage, as the girls are getting ready for the City Walk event, some of the girls start chatting, and we find out that Laura is bi-sexual, and AzMarie is lesbian. Ashley, who is Scottish has a really strong brogue, which some of the US girls find hard to understands. Ashley interviews that she was excited when she heard that it was going to be US vs. UK, but then she was also intimidated, because the girls are hot. Then, knowing that people were going to have problems understanding her, she lamented, “I am so getting subtitled.” Ashley also talks about her two children, and she says that she wants to do this to give her kids a better life.
We find out that Eboni is very educated, and she reminds me a lot of Cycle 14’s Simone for some reason. For that matter, Laura reminds me of Cycle 14’s Jessica, somewhat for her looks, but mainly for her voice. Ashley reminds me visually of Jayla, from Cycle 5. Catherine reminds me of Cycle 7’s twins, Michelle and Amanda.
Several of the UK girls seem to really have attitudes that they’re better than the new US girls. At the end of the runway, Jasmia even takes her jacket off and exaggeratedly swings it, hitting the US girl, AzMarie, who did not appreciate the act at all. This Cycle has a pair of plus-size models; Louise from the UK and Seymone from the US.
First look at the model house
After the runway, the girls are taken to their home, and we see that the US and UK girls are separated in different wings. There is a huge pool, and the US girls waste no time in going skinny dipping, which shocks the girls from the UK.
The next morning, we get our first Tyra mail!
“Prepare to clash cultures! Fierce and Love, Tyra”
Culture Clash photo shoot
It’s time to head off to the first photo shoot. The girls pile into the bus, which takes them to Siren Studios, where they meet Mr. Jay. He tells them that the first photo shoot will have the girls portraying icons from their individual countries. They will be shot in pairs; one from each country…jumping on trampolines…with sixty cameras capturing the action in 3D. Interesting.
First pair is Catherine and AzMarie, portraying Queen Elizabeth I and George Washington. Mr. Jay really likes what they give him, and I must say, I do as well. It’s a really interesting shoot.
Next, is Candace and Annaliese, as Janet Jackson and Mel B. of the Spice Girls. They do pretty well, but nothing spectacular.
The next pair is Laura and Alisha, as Madonna and Elton John. Mr. Jay doesn’t say much to Laura, but tells Alisha to bring a model to the table. She really doesn’t do well at all, although I’m not sure what she could have done differently, when she was wearing pants. She pulled her legs up tight when she jumped. On the other hand, Laura looked more elegant in her big tule skirt, as you couldn’t see her legs, so she didn’t look so awkward.
Seymone and Sophie are next, as Michelle Obama and Margaret Thatcher. Mr. Jay doesn’t say too much about them, so we’ll have to see what the judges think.
Next, is Kyle and Louise, as Andy Warhol and Amy Winehouse. Louise seems to pose pretty straight up and down, which is pretty boring. Mr. Jay calls her on it, and she interviews that she isn’t going to give it everything because she doesn’t want the other girl to feed off her energy. She thinks she knows what she’s doing. Hmmm… I would have to say that doesn’t sound like a good idea to go against what Mr. Jay suggests to me.
Mariah and Jasmia are next, as Pocahontas and John Lennon. I gotta say, Jasmia looks almost EXACTLY like Jael from Cycle 8, when they did the gender bending photoshoot. Mr. Jay tells the girls he wants to see them interact. He didn’t seem too thrilled.
The next pair is Eboni and Ashley, as Jackie Kennedy and Princess Diana. Mr. Jay didn’t say much to Eboni, but he was concerned at Ashley’s poses fell flat. He told her to stop thinking about Princess Diana, and to start thinking about what would look good as a fashion image. I think it was pretty harsh, though, because she had to jump on a trampoline in a floor length, rather tight gown, and I’m sure it wasn’t easy to do.
That’s the end of the shoot. It’s time for the girls to go back to the model home to try and relax before the next day’s panel and first elimination. Will it be an American or Brit going home first?
Dah dah dah…it’s the first Elimination mail
“Tomorrow you will meet with the judges. Only 13 will continue on in the hope of becoming America’s Next Top Model.”
Before going to bed, we get to see Ashley calling home to talk to her young daughter. This doesn’t look good. Seeing too much of one person usually means they’re going to be in the bottom to, or even going home.
Time to be judged
The next day at panel, Tyra welcomes everyone to the first panel, and she assures everyone that even though she is from the US, she will not be partial to US girls. She introduces the judges; Nigel Barker, Kelly Cutrone and guest judge, Kelly Osborne. She talks about the prizes; contract with LA Models and New York Model Mangement, get a spread in Vogue Italia, and appear on Vogue.it, become a celebrity correspondent on Extra, have a single produced on CBS records, become the new face of the America’s Next Top Model fragrance, called “Dream Come True,” and get a $100,000 contract with CoverGirl. (I still feel bad for poor Lisa D’Amato, who won Cycle 18, and was the face of the ANTM fragrance. Now, she’s kicked to the curb for a new winner to take her place.)
The first girls to be critiqued are Ebony and Ashley. Kelly C. doesn’t like how Eboni’s eyes look in the picture. Tyra didn’t think Ashley really exuded Princess Diana. Kelly O. thought that Ashley’s dress and face were elegant, but her body looked very masculine.
Laura and Alisha are next. Tyra asks them how they think they did, and Laura says she feels she didn’t nail it. This ticks Kelly C. off, after she sees the picture. She likes the picture, but she was prepared to see something looking bad because of Laura’s attitude. She tells her not to sell herself short again. Nigel thinks Alisha’s pose says nothing about Elton John. Kelly O. says that Elton John is all about happiness, and Alisha just looks really tough.
Catherine and AzMarie are next. Nigel thinks Catherine is really there as Queen Elizabeth. Tyra says she wanted to see AzMarie have a little more oomph.
Mariah and Jasmia are next. Kelly C. doesn’t like either of the girl’s pictures. Tyra thinks Jasmia looks too “Lenny Kravitz” rather than “John Lennon.” Nigel doesn’t think that Mariah committed, and especially considering that she is Native American, she should have had a spectacular photo.
Kyle and Louise are next. Kelly C. loves Kyle as Andy Warhol. She loves her as a blonde. Nigel doesn’t like Louise’s angles. She’s very straight up and down.
The next girls to be critiqued are Candace and Annaliese. Nigel thinks Annaliese has too much anger in her face. Kelly C. says there is no energy in her face, and if it was in a magazine, she would just turn the page. Tyra thinks Candace should have looked more angry. It looked more like she was riding a horse.
The last pair to be critiqued are Seymone and Sophie. Nigel is really impressed with Seymone’s shot. He thinks it’s almost the strongest photo he’s seen today. Tyra tells Sophie her pose reminds her of Margaret Thatcher meets Judge Judy, and it’s fierce.
The judges deliberated and the call-outs went as follows:
Jasmia and Ashley are in the bottom two. The judges think that Jasmia didn’t embody John Lennon at all. The judges wanted to see Princess Diana’s amazing eyes, but Ashley didn’t give them what they wanted. Who will go home? Jasmia will be packing her bags and heading back to Britain. Ashley lives on to see another challenge.
Next week on America’s Next Top Model it’s time for makeovers. It’s said that Tyra’s phone was hacked and some of the juicy info that was retrieved had to do with the makeovers. Then, the girls will do a photo shoot with Kris Jenner and her daughters, Kendall and Kylie Jenner. Tune in on March 7th on The CW at 9:00 pm to see who will be the next to go home, and who will triumph in the challenges.
