This week on America’s Next Top Model, the models will take an international trip to Toronto, Canada, where they will go on castings with a number of designers. How exciting! Some of the girls are super excited, as they are quite good at runway. Other girls have no experience, and terror goes through them when they hear about the challenge.
The girls arrive back at the model house and see AzMarie’s winning photo, and the American girls share the gift from AzMarie’s win. We don’t see what exactly they get this week. Perhaps the excitement of the first week or two, the producers thought there were better things to spend time showing than the girls opening up their gifts.
Sophie realizes that AzMarie is some serious competition, but she feels she is up to the challenge. We shall see.
Eboni is shown complaining that Kyle didn’t even want to be in the competition, and she feels she should go home. Kyle interviews that she knows the other girls are mad that she is staying, but they’ll just have to get over it. Laura interviews that she’s sick of seeing the girls getting upset at every little thing, and she admits that she lost a good friend of hers in a motorcycle accident before she came to the competition, and she feels blessed just to be there.
We have a different TyraMail this time. One of the VirginMobile phones is on one of the tables in the break room, and Annaliese plugs it into the TV for everyone to view the video message.
It’s actually Mr. Jay, and he tells them that he’s calling from Toronto, Canada, where he’s getting ready to put on his second collection for Attitude by Jay Manuel. He says that all the girls are invited to Toronto Fashion Week, where they’ll all go on real castings, to see how they’ll do in the real world of modeling. He tells them to grab their portfolios and pack their bags, because they’re jumping on a flight to Canada tonight.
The girls arrive in Canada, and meet Mr. Jay on the top of the CN Tower the next morning. He tells them that the girl that books the most jobs will win pieces from his clothing collection. Plus, they’ll also win a trip back to Canada for a special event.
The girls meet with Kim Newport-Mimran from Pink Tartan casting. She has them each walk and they decide whom they want to cast. After seeing Ashley walk, she says what she’s really looking for is a walking coat hanger. She doesn’t like a lot of movement. Ashley comments to the camera, “Alright, that’s fine then. I’ve not got this job.”
The girls that are chosen are: Kyle, Laura and Sophie. I was shocked that they didn’t like Catherine’s walk. I thought she looked really good walking, but they thought she needed practice.
Next, the girls meet with Hans Koechling, who is casting for six more shows. The girls each walk, and Hans tells them they are interested in AzMarie, Annaliese, Alisha, Sophie and Eboni. In the end, Annaliese books 2 of 8, AzMarie books 2 of 8. Sophie books 3 of 8. Alisha books 2 of 8. Eboni books 4 of 8. The girls not chosen at all are Catherine, Seymone and Ashley.
The last designer they will see is Mr. Jay. He will use Laura, Kyle, AzMarie and Sophie. This makes 2 of 8 for Laura; Kyle also booked 2 of 8. AzMarie booked 3 of 8, and Sophie booked 4 of 8. This puts Sophie and Eboni in a tie for first place, each of them booking half their castings, which is quite impressive. Now, it will depend on how everyone does at the shows that night.
Kyle, Laura and Sophie practice for the Pink Tartan show, and after everyone does a practice run through, Kim Newport-Mimran tells Kyle and Laura that they aren’t showing the confidence she needs, so she has to cut them. She says they have potential, but they’re just not ready right then.
That night the girls participating in the show get ready, and those not participating will be in the audience. Everyone seemed to do pretty well. No one fell down. We’ll see at judging. But first… Tyra Mail!
“Sticky & Sweet and oh so delicious! Fierce and Love, Tyra”
The next day, the girls meet Mr. Jay who greets them and tells them that because both Sophie and Eboni both did so well on the runway, they’ll each win the prize of some items from his collection, plus each will get to have an all-expense paid trip back to Canada for the Calgary Stampede. It is the rodeo’s 100th anniversary, and it’s the largest rodeo in North America.
Mr. Jay goes on to tell the girls about the photo shoot. The photographer for the photo shoot is Miguel Jacob, who was a photographer for Mr. Jay on Canada’s Next Top Model, where he is the host. They will be covered in organic maple syrup and covered in a leaf bikini.
It’s definitely a sticky shoot and Mr. Jay is most impressed by Sophie, Catherine, Annaliese and Seymone. He doesn’t say much about the others.
Laura breaks down on the set, thinking about the friend that died in a motorcycle accident. She said she didn’t really have time to properly mourn his death, and so she’s been letting it out a bit week-by-week while she is in the competition. She intends on using her sadness to help her push through her photo shoot.
It’s time for panel. Tyra welcomes the girls, introduces the judges; Nigel Barker, Kelly Cutrone and guest judge Beverly Johnson. It’s time for critiques.
Alisha – Kelly wants her to model more. She feels there is a supermodel inside waiting to get out. Nigel wants her to use her angles.
Sophie – Nigel loves her piercing eyes. Beverly loves that the photo is not sexual. It’s high fashion.
Catherine – Nigel thinks this is his favorite shot so far. Tyra loves that she is smizing through her soul.
Ashley – Nigel thinks she looks afraid in the photo, and even in person, he can see her fear. Kelly loves her personality, and she loves seeing her every week, but it’s not enough.
Annaliese – Tyra loves her body language and her bone structure. Nigel likes the animalistic pose.
Laura – Nigel loves her body language, and he loves the one eye look. Kelly asks her about her inspiration, and Laura explains about thinking about her friend that she lost in the motorcycle accident. Tyra likes Laura’s vulnerability.
Kyle – Beverly remarks that Kyle has her old waistline. She likes the pose and Kyle’s eyes are extraordinary. Kelly says that Kyle is a beautiful girl, and she shoots beautifully, and when she looks at her she sees a model.
AzMarie – Beverly thinks the shot is hot. Kelly agrees, saying, “Smoldering hot, boiling hot, chica, chica, chica, yes!” Tyra thinks AzMarie’s eyes look like she is looking back at the boys, thinking, “I see you looking at my bootie, don’t you want some of this maple bootie?” (Seeing that AzMarie is a lesbian, I highly doubt that she is thinking that about the boys ;D)
Seymone – Nigel thinks this is the best beauty shot. Beverly comments that Seymone knows her body, where to place her hand, etc. She loves the photo. Even Kelly loves the photo.
Eboni – Nigel thinks it’s gorgeous. Kelly compares it to the French girls called Matissey, and congratulates her on doing a beautiful job. Tyra thinks she looks sexy, but there is a pureness about it.
The judges deliberate and the call-outs go as follows:
The girls in the bottom two are Catherine and Ashley. Both girls booked 0 fashion shows. Who will stay? Catherine’s strong photo pulls her through, and the adorable Ashley goes home.
Before we go on to talk about what to expect next week, I have got to say, I was shocked by the amount of Photoshop editing that went on with this week’s photoshoot photos.
I realize that some Photoshop editing is necessary to touch up some minor imperfections and enhance photos. My day job is a photo retoucher, so I do know what I’m talking about. There is a way to Photoshop an image and soften someone’s face, and there is another way that makes the person look like a plastic doll.
This week’s photos that I feel were over edited are: Alisha, Annaliese, Eboni, Kyle (to a point) and Seymone. I’m not talking about their entire bodies, but just their faces were smoothed out totally. Yet, the Photoshop was fine on Ashley, AzMarie, Catherine, Laura and Sophie, so I don’t get why some of the girls were excessively edited.
In Cycle’s past, it was brought to the girls’ attention that it was not good to have to be retouched, as it is quite expensive. I notice that Eboni’s curling iron burn has been edited out each week in her photoshoot photos. If you look at her when she’s talking (yelling) at someone in the house, you can see the small light-colored circle that remains on her right cheek, yet that is not in any of her photoshoot shots.
Anyway, getting off my soapbox now, but I just had to remark on the excessiveness of the Photoshop job. They really need to be a little less heavy handed. AzMarie’s face is gorgeous, and you can see the parts where the syrup is on it, and parts where it is not. They did not Photoshop her to death, and I feel they should have been just as prudent with the other girls.
Next week, America’s Next Top Model All-Star Cycle winner Lisa D’Amato is in the house and teaching the girls to do a music video and song. She is the perfect person to teach them about creating a music video.
Who will be a winner at singing, and who will sound like a frog? Tune in next Wednesday at 9:00 pm on The CW to find out.
