The rise and deceleration of Apple–
In the face of tremendously successful sales of the iPhone 4S and the recent launch of the popular New iPad from Apple, the profits continue to expand the bank accounts of Apple to the tune of over $110 billion dollars. So a forecast of Apple’s eventual demise as a cutting edge company seems strangely out of place.
But according to George Colony, CEO of analyst firm Forrester, this is exactly what he sees regarding the future of Apple.
Jobs and the innovation vacuum
During Steve Jobs leadership at Apple, he became not only the iconic figure representing the company; he was also instrumental in bringing innovative products to light that became the backbone of Apple’s success.
“When Steve Jobs departed, he took three things with him: 1) singular charismatic leadership that bound the company together and elicited extraordinary performance from its people; 2) the ability to take big risks, and 3) an unparalleled ability to envision and design products.”
He also added that the recent successes by Apple are really based upon ideas that Jobs had already put into the pipeline, and that within 12 to 24 months they all will have dried up, leaving Tim Cook responsible for forging new product lines; something that Colony alludes to as doubtful.
Just like Sony, Disney and Polaroid
Colony made references to Sony, Disney, and Polaroid as examples of great companies that started to falter after innovative leadership passed on:
“Like Sony (post Morita), Polaroid (post Land), Apple circa 1985 (post Jobs), and Disney (post Walt Disney), Apple will coast, and then decelerate.”
Can Tim Cook innovate?
Since the untimely passing of Steve Jobs in October 2011, Cook has been seen as a very capable leader that has brought a new dimension of transparency and profitability to Apple’s business model.
But as capable as Cook is, the question remains as to whether he can rise to the occasion of being more than just the CEO of a company and lead Apple into new products that will continue Apple’s tradition of innovation and cutting-edge technology.
Will Colony’s prediction come true? At this moment, only Tim Cook knows the answer to this question.
