As we know Green Living is a life style. It is about making choices that are good for the earth and for us.
One of these choices is about the food we eat. Eating organic food is not only good for us, but also good for the environment.
Organic food is good food:
- It tastes good
- It is good for the environment. The EPA says that agriculture is responsible for 70% of the pollution to the country’s rivers and streams caused by chemicals, erosion, and animal waste runoff.
- It is good for you (pesticide-free, so you can reap the benefit)
- It is good for small-scale farmers
Just recently Dr Oz gave a list of the food we must buy organic:
Potatoes that are grown above ground, therefore are sprayed with pesticides.
If you can’t buy organic potatoes Dr Oz recommends to try sweet potatoes; as are grown with less pesticides.
Peppers and Celery
They are like a sponge and absorb the chemicals through the skin. Washing or peeling will not help.
Leafy Greens: Lettuce, Spinach and Collard Greens
They are doused in pesticides to ward off insects.
Dairy Products: Yogurt, Butter, Cheese and Ice-Cream
Non-organic dairy products may come from cows fed a diet of genetically modified corn, soy, and antibiotics.
For more on the list.
The San Francisco Green Living Examiner’s Note: Organically grown crops may not be fertilized with any synthetic fertilizers. Organically grown produce may be sprayed with various naturally-occurring pest-control substances such as sulfur, copper, dolomite, Bacillius Thuringensis, and diatomaceous earth. These are safer for farmers, farmworkers, and the environment than synthetic pesticides.
