Relocating to a new area means adjusting one’s self to the must have’s of unfamiliar surroundings; a new dry cleaner, bank branch, grocery store and pharmacy are always at the top of the list. Equally fundamental is the identification of local restaurants that prepare your favorite fare with the kind of mouth watering panache you require.
If you’ve arrived from the northeast, the emphasis is fresh seafood; the midwest, barbecue that has a sauce that isn’t vinegar based. West coast transplants, and we speak from our own experience, seek authentic Mexican food. But the one specific food longing we all have in common is a local restaurant that meets, and exceeds our expectations of a perfect burger; freshly prepared to our exacting tastes, using the very best juicy and flavorful beef, and offering a wide variety of toppings choices to satisfy our every whim. We also require an unwavering consistency in quality, as well as a reasonable price. Tucked away in Durham’s Hope Valley Square, this modest little storefront has proven to be all of this, and more.
Only Burger, located at 3710 Shannon Road, doesn’t look like much. In fact, it’s easy to drive by and not notice it at all; unless it’s close to lunch time, when hungry patrons begin to arrive in droves. Beginning with a food truck in 2008, the restaurant opened it’s doors in late 2010. But the food truck continues to be a mainstay and can be found all over the Triangle until late in the evening at various locations. Follow the truck on Twitter, @onlyburger, or check their calendar on the website. Only Burger has been positively written up in the New York Times, Durham Magazine, Martha Stewart Living and the News and Observer, as well as accomplishing a runner-up finish on the Food Network’s America’s Favorite Food Truck show.
The restaurant prepares everything to order, using fresh Montana raised, natural hormone free beef, which is supplied by Cliff’s Meat Market in Carrboro. They serve turkey burgers as well, and offer tasty vegetarian options. Their fries and onion rings are also freshly prepared and are fabulous. If you aren’t sure which sides to order, try their sampler of fries, homemade pickle chips and fried green tomatoes. YUM! Only Burger also offers domestic and local microbrew beers in the restaurant, as well as the usual non alcoholic drinks to accompany your meal. Whether you eat in or take away, you’ll find yourself manufacturing a reason to be in Durham so that you can indulge, often.
Only Burger is open Monday through Saturday, from 11:00 am until 9:00 pm, and on Sunday, from 11:00 am until 8:00 pm.
