There was another National Enquirer tale about Barbra Streisand this week. If you are to believe the tabloid, Barbra’s husband of 14 years, actor-director James Brolin, is vehemently opposed to her decision to play the lead role in a big screen version of the Broadway musical “Gypsy.”
The publication cites inside sources that claim that the couple is at “loggerheads” because Jim thinks Barbra is too old to play Mama Rose, the mother of stripper Gypsy Rose Lee, and will look like a fool if she makes the movie.
Well, while they purport that the story is accurate, Jim Brolin disagrees. For the first time ever, Brolin ‘hijacked’ his wife’s Truth Alert feature on her website to set the record straight.
Here’s what he wrote late Wednesday night:
I asked my wife if I could borrow her Truth Alert to respond to the latest tabloid nonsense, an outrageous story that I oppose her doing “Gypsy.” These scandal sheet guys only print stuff that is the exact opposite of the truth. I’m already lined up to buy the first ticket for that film.
Her youthful beauty will perfectly complement her singing and performance. But the point here is that tabloids only traffic in bad news, bad news that they have to maliciously make up in Barbra’s case. This stepped up flow of lies must stem from her public’s interest in the run of great new projects on her schedule. It certainly has heated up these so-called “papers” mad disdain for the truth.
Presumably, Jim Brolin knows better than the National Enquirer his true feelings about “Gypsy.” His statement is proof positive that he believes in Barbra’s ability to make this film something special. He not only offers unconditional support, which is great to see in any married couple, but he also makes a point to mention “her youthful beauty.” Since he gets to see her up close and personal, perhaps he’s a better judge of her looks than skeptical members of the media?
Jim also revealed that there are “great new projects on her schedule.” Well, we’ve heard about a 12 DVD set of retrospective material from the vaults, and the release of Barbra’s new film, “The Guilt Trip,” is coming on November 2, 2012. But it sure seems like there may be more to come than what we know!
Finally, Jim also has noticed that there has been an increase in the tabloid’s interest in Barbra of late. After a relative quiet time when the National Enquirer was virtually ignoring Barbra, in the past couple of months there have been three stories.
There was the Jason Gould is fighting with his mother piece, which included a photograph of Jason which wasn’t actually Jason! Then there was another less publicized yarn about Barbra hiring a dog whisperer because her little dog, Sammie, had been exhibiting behavioral problems, like not wanting to have Jim sleep in the same bed with Barbra!
And now there’s this week’s bombshell about “Gypsy,” which Jim Brolin has just revealed to be a dud. It’s not accurate and we have it direct from the man who should know the truth. For the many Barbra fans out there who saw the story and wondered if there was a scintilla of truth to it, thank you, Jim, for borrowing Barbra’s Truth Alert!
