The phenomenal response to last year’s Vegan Earth Day has spawned a new tradition in Berkely, California.
The second annual Berkeley Vegan Earth Day is happening Sunday April 22, 2012. This event has grown from an evening celebration to an all-day extravaganza that will include films, workshops, panel discussions and an exciting array of speakers. Area businesses will be on-site with products to sample and buy, while non-profit groups will be there with a wealth of information about their eco/vegan organizations.
This year’s presenters include Dr. John McDougall from the McDougall Health and Medical Center in Santa Rosa, CA, whose impact on the vegan health world is well-known. Featured at the recent Advanced Nutrition Study Weekend in Santa Rosa, CA. Dr. McDougall debated Dr. Joel Fuhrman on “What is the Ideal Diet?” If you missed it, you can catch my notes from the McDougall-Fuhrman debate moderated by Whole Foods Market CEO John Mackey here.
Also presenting at Vegan Earth Day will be Dr. Michael Klaper from True North Health in Santa Rosa, CA. Klaper also recently headlined at the Advanced Nutrition Studay Weekend with the presentation “From the Operating Room to the Dining Room, the Evolution of a Nutritionally-Aware Physician”, which garnered the first standing ovation of the weekend.
When Klaper was 6 months away from his official status as an anaesthesiologist, he back pedaled to family practice precisely because of what he saw on the operating table and where he could make the most difference about it. In atherosclerotic surgery when assisting, he would see what was being pulled out of the arteries as artherosclerotic plaque and began to feel like a cog in the heart-disease machine as surgery would not often give way to lifestyle changes. And that was where his passion clearly lay: Lifestyle change.
How best to make a difference, then? Back into general practice for Dr. Klaper, where he continues to make a huge difference in diet, health, and lifestyle changes for many to this day. His presentation at Vegan Earth Day will be well worth the price of admission alone.
