Sorry, Mr. Z’s, I know everybody says you’re the best, and maybe in Key West you might be, but for the best Philly cheese steak in the Florida Keys, stop by mile marker 88 at Boardwalk Pizza in Tavernier. These Jersey guys fly everything in fresh, and they might not be from Philly like the people at the Philadelphian in Port Charlotte – which is consider to be the best in Florida – or as cheesy as the ones at Munchies 420 Cafe in Sarasota – which is also really good (and was featured on Man Vs. Food) – but Boardwalk has consistently great cheese steaks.
My father’s from Philadelphia, and he’s one of the biggest critics on cheese steaks I know. First of all, he’s a beef guy, so much so that my cousins called him “Uncle Beefy.” Secondly, and most importantly, if he says it’s good, trust me, it’s good.
We’ve been taste testing Philly cheese steaks since I was a little kid, and I’ve often seen dad wrinkle his nose up at what restaurants call authentic. Sure, you’re not going to have the exact Philly in Florida, but they serve up birch beer, so it’s just like a little slice of Philly heaven here in Florida. Trust me, the above named restaurants are worth a taste if you want a Philly.
