TAMPA – Call it consignment, thrifting, clothing exchange, or dumpster diving (ok, just kidding about that last one). Call it what you will, consignment fashion takes patience. While it’s completely possible to create a million dollar look from a minimum budget, no one would argue that it’s easy. We are not all the Mondo Guerras of the world, with the ability to turn thrift store scraps into designer treasure.

Best kid’s consignment in Tampa – Baby Boomerang, 2902 Kennedy Blvd. 1 813.879.2146
Kids grow quickly, and many a mom could benefit from a quality consignment kid’s store in Tampa. Baby Boomerang offers a high level of quality in the clothing, car seats, toys, and books that they allow to be sold in store. Additionally, the shop often features name brands on both the clothes and other goods. One last good sign? Mindy Socher has been the sole owner of Baby Boomerang for more than twenty years.
Best store with a scene in Tampa – Revolve Clothing Exchange, 1620 E. 7th Ave, Ybor City. 1 813.242.5970
If Tampa thrift stores were like high school, Revolve Clothing Exchange would be the table where go-your-own-way Molly Ringwald sat in the 80’s classic Pretty in Pink. The store, located squarely in the heart of eclectic Ybor City, is full of fun, funky finds, including staff picks, a section dedicated to vinyl, and a DIY area where Golden Girls–esque house dresses meet 90’s neon and spandex. Great music and a large jewelry selection add to the experience, and 25% off Student Wednesdays appeal to the college crowd.
Best community consigner – Fresh Threads – Designer Consigner of South Tampa, 4230 S MacDill Ave, Suite F. 1 813.449.3578
A good store creates return customers, but a great store creates a community. Fresh Threads – Designer Consigner of South Tampa does just that. The store has an array of designer fashion ranging from mid- to high-end items, but that’s just the beginning. They often host events like the Valentine’s Day Sweetheart Soiree, encouraging customers to mingle in a casual atmosphere. Beyond that, the store has a personal touch: featured artwork by local South Tampa photograher marissa moss photography (View the slideshow here).

Best throwback thrift store in Tampa – Tie! Sherry’s YesterDaze, 5207 N. Florida Ave. 1 813.253.3735 and Squaresville Vintage, 508 S. Howard Ave. 1 813.259.9944
It was hard to pick just one, because both of these retro-themed Tampa thrift stores truly are the best-of throwbacks – but each has a distinct focus and feel. Sherry’s YesterDaze is located in historic Seminole Heights and features a variety of costume and collectible clothing from the 1800’s through the 1990’s. Squaresville Vintage is in the heart of Hyde Park and focuses more on the outrageous costume pieces from the 1960’s-2000’s. Both stores have a selection of mid-century furniture and household decor items.
Best consignment with a conscience in Tampa – Salvation Army Family Stores Tampa Bay, 5 area locations
The size of a warehouse but neat, clean, and at least one location newly remodeled, Tampa’s Salvation Army Family Stores are also chock full of rotating merchandise at steal prices. Read a review of the Suncoast stores here. Not only is the merchandise kept current, but the proceeds go to a good cause. The five Tampa Family Store locations fund the entire Salvation Army’s Adult Rehabilitation Center(ARC), where troubled men can receive spiritual, social, and emotional assistance and readjust to the workforce in the warehouses or stores.

Best designer deals in Tampa – Mosh Posh Designer Consigner, 500 South Howard Ave. 1 813.258.8800
Mosh Posh is not your average consignment store. When we say deals, we don’t mean ‘steals’ in the sense of bargain brands – think a $2,500 Chanel handbag for $600, perhaps. This shop is selective, it features the highest of high-end designers, and it caters to the sophisticated socialities of South Tampa. One could walk out their door in head-to-toe runway fashion, with this season’s Vuitton hanging over her shoulder for a fraction of the cost. Of course, the items found here are in new, or like-new, condition. If you are looking for the best in discounted designer, look no further than Mosh Posh.

Best vintage fashion in Tampa – LaFrance, 1612 E. 7th Ave, Ybor City. 1 813.248.1381
One might ask how vintage differs from the retro categories above. LaFrace features vintage fashion and accessories from period gowns to wedding dresses to men’s suits, with items sourced everywhere from Tampa to New York City. Just walking into LaFrance feels like being transported to the golden age. The shop is filled to the brim with trinkets, top hats, and rack upon rack of delicate clothing carefully encased in protective plastic, as if denoting its vintage roots. A visit to Ybor City is not complete without this trip down America’s memory lane, especially at Christmas time (photo slideshow).
