New Milford has had its share of restaurants come and go, but 59 Bank, as it is commonly known, is one of the few that has sustained. The reason is clear.
Enter in from Bank Street to the ambiance of New York City with its long, full bar and hardwood floors and high ceiling. There is some seating on this floor but the dining area is primarily downstairs, with an entrance of its own from Railroad Street. The lower level exudes graciousness and charm, which is enhanced by the doting servers and a view of the historic railroad station.
Menu items include classic American and Italian dishes and a special selection for kids. The coconut shrimp appetizer is served with sweet apricot horseradish sauce; a delightful combination of sweet and tangy. The burger choices are extensive and include a veggie burger with avocado for those seeking the lower fat version. On the lighter side, the grilled chicken wrap includes a roasted corn black bean relish, proving that lighter fare does not have to be at the expense of satiety. Homemade sweet potato chips on the side are just the right complement.
In addition to the mainstay desserts of Italian cheesecake and tiramisu, there are anomalies such as the fried banana split. Share it with a dining partner, or two, to savor but not overindulge in this ice cream encapsulated in banana and coconut.
Easy to remember, 59 Bank is located on 59 Bank Street. The establishment is open seven days per week; on Friday and Saturdays until 2:00 a.m. with live entertainment. Brunch is served on Saturdays and Sundays.
