A reportedly almost 50 youths at Detroit’s all-boys Frederick Douglass Academy walked out of class in protest of the poor education they believe they’re receiving.
As reported by MyFoxDetroit.com/WJBK, young men who are required to wear slacks, button-down shirts and ties, were joined by parents in protesting what they consider a failure by both the school administration and the Detroit Public Schools system to provide the basics for a solid education.
According to senior Devante Billups:
“We have no teachers and we are not learning anything.
We need more teachers and books.”
On the cusp of graduation, Billups unselfishly added:
“I want the kids [that are] under me, I want them to be able to have the education that we were supposed to have that we didn’t get.”
Realizing that the longest journey begins with the first step, fellow senior Alex Cooper echoed the sentiments of his classmate:
“It’s been going on for awhile now.
We [are] just finally getting everybody to get together, protest and do something about this.”
A spokesperson with Detroit Public Schools did not respond to WJBK’s request for comment.
Mama Grizzly Defends Her Cubs…
Parent Sharise Smith was far from meek when she pointed her rightly accusing finger directly at those who have been entrusted with cultivating and educating the community’s next generation of husbands, fathers and leaders.
“The math teacher has been absent 68 plus days.
It’s a shame that these young men are at school every single day.
They’re showing up and the teachers are not, and the education is lacking greatly in the school.
It’s a travesty.”
The perturbed parent drew the proverbial line in the sand:
“The kids will tell you that they are not getting what they are entitled to, and the community needs to stand up, show up, show out and let DPS [know] that this substandard education is not going to be allowed.”
Letter From The Detroit Hall Of Detention…
The young men in question displayed the moral courage and fortitude to make a stand in favor of the quest for knowledge, as well as demanding that they not be regulated to a life ignorance, degradation, and relying on someone other than themselves be responsible for the informed decisions they make in life.
For making that decision, the Detroit Free Press is reporting that the students who protested have been suspended from school.
