“The covered surface hugs the board but keeps in the sky,
A childhood glimpse that keeps you warm but hangs you to dry,
The shameful dream the shameful face that pulls on your heart,
Those brittle winds will keep the dawn from you at the start,
So bring me choirs to ease me on my way,
Bring me screams of organs for the day,
Bring me choirs to brighten all the gales,
Bring me screams or organs and the wails, of winter tales.”
From A Winter Tale by Bobby Long
Winter is over and spring is in full bloom. Yellow daffodils and grey thunderstorms paint our days in a wash of color and our thoughts turn to flip-flips, music festivals, and sunscreen. We scan the Internet looking for concerts that beckon to our winter-weary souls, and sometimes, just sometimes, we’re rewarded. Such is the case with the news about British singer-songwriter-guitarist Bobby Long. He has recently announced on Twitter and Facebook that he will be opening for Iron and Wine on Saturday, April 28th at the Tivoli Theater in Chattanooga, Tennessee. For fans of Bobby Long and Iron and Wine, this news is like a soothing balm on wintry heartaches, and promises to be the “event of the year.”
Iron and Wine’s song, Flightless Bird, American Mouth,” was featured on the 2008 Twilight soundtrack and the wedding version of Flightless Bird, American Mouth, was featured on the 2011 Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn soundtrack. Iron and Wine, led by Samuel Beam, an American singer-songwriter, has released numerous studio albums, several EPs and singles.
Bobby just finished a tour in support of Rodrigo y Gabriela and begins a tour supportingSteve Winwood on May 11 at the Riverside Theater in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Doors open at 7:00 on Saturday and Bobby is expected to perform at 8:00 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at ironandwine.com, or contact the Tivoli Theater at 709 Broad Street, Chattanooga, TN 37402. (423) 757-5050.
If you can get to this concert, then go. I promise you – it will be the perfect evening to help you usher in springtime and soothe the weariness of a wintry soul. I, for one, will be trekking the 2 hour drive from Nashville to enjoy this night.
