At PAX East 2012, we were treated to a hands-on preview of the upcoming Borderlands 2. Without knowing much about the sequel going in, we’re happy to report that it captures the flavor of the original, adds some signature sauce, and spins out an order of gunsblazing wings that both fans of the first title and players new to the series will not want to miss.
Strapping into the role of the Gunzerker we dove into the Caustic Caverns map. The demo had the characters already loaded with a good deal of guns and ammo to play with, and play we did. The Gunzerker’s ability to wield two weapons at the same time absolutely shredded many of the early map denizens, some of which had perky abilities such as burrowing underground or requiring precision blows to remove crystalline protection.
It’s fairly difficult to discuss Borderlands 2 without referring to the original – It’s all back, it’s all polished, and it’s all been kicked up a notch for another round of blast and bash fun. Players familiar with the original Borderlands, many of the mechanics have been tightened up and polished here for what appears to be an even better co-op experience. Loot, skill trees, huge enemies and swarms of smaller ones are all on display, and the quick taste we got of things was certainly not enough to satiate.
In just the 15 minutes we had to experience Borderlands 2, we fought through a wide variety of enemies with a regular king’s arsenal. We assure you, there’s nothing quite like triggering gunzerking and going buck wild into a pack of critters with the shotgun-style weapon and the assault rifle. If you’ve played the first game, there’s a lot more here to love. If you haven’t, well, you’ve still got a few months to see what you’ve been missing before Borderlands 2 hits on September 18, 2012.
