It should have been shocking and appalling when the news of the feeding tube diet was spread. People on feeding tubes who had no other choices are outraged. Feeding tubes are normally used for psychiatric patients who refuse to eat or those with physical conditions that prevent them from eating normally such as coma and stroke patients. Feeding tubes keep them alive.
Dr. Scott Shikora, the director of the Center for Metabolic Health and Bariatric Surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston said any regime that restricts calories will lead to weight loss. “The novelty is, they shove a tube in your nose,” It doesn’t matter if it’s through a tube, a straw, a meal plan,” he said. “They all work, if someone goes from 3,000 calories a day to 800.” source
What is the feeding tube diet?
Needless to say not only are people using feeding tubes desperate, as a social worker, the conclusion would be that these people need mental health counseling.
You do not have to be in a hospital for a tube to be inserted in your nose. The tube is threaded into your stomach and a protein pack of liquid nutrients is dispensed through the tube. This makes up about 800 calories a day. You might wonder why these people don’t just eat 800 calories a day. Perhaps spending $1500 for a ten-day plan is a motivating factor for sticking with this extreme diet rather than trying to eat healthfully for a few months.
An adult woman should consume about 2,000 calories a day. You can drop many of those calories for the purpose of weight loss, but never go below 1,200.
You lose weight because your body goes into starvation mode. It starts to burn stored sugar to keep normal body functions going. It acts as a low-carb diet much in the way that the Atkins Diet works; however, people eat real food on Atkins and can eat carbohydrates. The feeding tube diet offers no carbs.
What people may not want to hear is the process your body goes through. It will start to eat away at muscle. Side effects may include dizziness, constipation, lung infections, kidney failure, and bad breath.
Many people want to lose 20 pounds in 10 days, but it will not stay off and it is a very risky way to get that weight off. If you are desperate, i.e. getting married, start cutting calories months before your wedding and you will drop 20 pounds in a healthy way.
