Does your child act as if he/she is driven by a motor? Or does your child talk excessively? How about when your child goes into hyper focus and you contemplate using a megaphone to get his/her attention? These are just a few of the symptoms those diagnosed with ADHD struggle with on a daily basis. These symptoms may cause many issues throughout your child’s life, especially in a structured setting like school, but these same symptoms can easily be construed as highly sought after skills in adults. How does a parent teach their child how to turn these symptoms into usable skills in the future?
It may seem silly to actually consider that symptoms from any disorder may somehow propel a person into greatness, but don’t discount the idea just yet. More and more celebrities are coming forward to announce that they too have ADHD. Who would imagine that a box office superstar and an Olympic gold medalist could possibly suffer from ADHD? It is refreshing that celebrities are coming forward because a huge stigma has hung over ADHD for years. Some are even too embarrassed to disclose that they have been diagnosed with the condition. The celebrities listed below have acknowledged that they either have been diagnosed with ADHD or have exhibited ADHD symptoms during childhood.
Sir Richard Branson
ADHD is not the only commonality amongst those on the list. Many of them can be characterized as being driven. Michael Phelps won an Olympic medal, and as you know it takes determination to beat the competition. And how about Justin Timberlake, he went from singing in a successful boy group to being an accomplished solo artist and now is a budding actor, it takes a lot of drive to wear that many hats.
So be reminded by the celebrities who live with ADHD. It is clear that their parents did not try to extinguish their ADHD traits but helped them use those traits to stand apart from the rest of their peers. Parents of children suffering from ADHD should seek help through therapy and support groups to promote the special traits that reside within your ADHD child. Hone their creativity and individuality and any other skill that most may see as a drawback. That ADHD characteristic just might be the very thing that causes Hollywood to come knocking at the door.
