The headline does not lie. The character of Charlie Harper is returning to CBS’s Two and a Half Men in April 30th’s episode. The plot? Alan (Jon Cryer) has a heart attack, and Charlie’s ghost pays him a visit in the hospital.
Of course, here is the answer to the most pressing question about this press release: Alan’s heart attack is minor, and his character is fine. Jon Cryer is not going anywhere.
Just kidding. No, Charlie Sheen is not coming back to the series. After all the hurt feelings, gossip, slander, and legal battles, the stage for that, if it ever happens, which seems highly unlikely, will not be set for quite some time. Instead, Charlie’s ghost will be played by someone fans will not expect. Go ahead. Take three hundred guesses. You won’t get it.
Kathy Bates. Yep, the star of NBC’s legal drama Harry’s Law, is tackling the role of Charlie Harper for one night only. Sure, she has some obnoxious shoes to fill, but if any performer can fill them, it’s Bates. She went fully naked in About Schmidt. Surely this can’t be any more embarrassing than that.
Actually, credit should be given to Kathy Bates. She is a fantastic actress, both in comedy and drama. This is a really funny opportunity, and one cannot blame her for jumping at the chance, even on a series as bad as Two and a Half Men. Besides, this is not the first connection Bates has to making light of death. She was a recurring character on HBO’s very dark dramaedy Six Feet Under.
So, TV fans. Are you excited about Charlie’s return? Will Kathy Bates do the part justice? Sound off in the comments below.
