Can the punishment ever fit the crime when an adult and a 13-year-old teenager tell police that torturing five small dogs and five puppies on YouTube was for entertainment purposes only? The Chicago Police Department – Animal Crimes Team and Gang Investigations Division arrested Joshua Moore, 22 and the teen on multiple counts of animal cruelty and animal torture. Moore told police he didn’t do anything wrong.
Moore is currently in jail in lieu of $150,000 bail. He has been charged with eight counts of animal cruelty and four counts of animal torture. The 13-year-old has been charged with six counts of animal cruelty and three counts of animal torture.
The police department obtained a search warrant for the home located on the 200 block of North Lockwood Ave after people who saw the video clearly depicting egregious acts of animal cruelty to the chihuahuas and small terriers called authorities making complaints.
According to Mail Online, a dog was suspended from a harness and leash and spun violently in circles. The video camera zoomed in at the face of the dog whose eyes began to pulsate wildly with fear.
The video also showed the following acts of vile cruelty towards the dogs:
- The men tossed the dogs high in the air and then just let the dogs fall to the floor.
- The puppies of a mother dog were taken away from her and hidden. The video showed the mental anguish of the mother dog as she desperately looked around the yard for her puppies.
- The teenager used rubbing alcohol on one of the dog’s testicles, applied duct tape and then ripped it off. This was shown twice on the video.
- One of the men poured lemon juice down the dog’s throat until it gagged.
- The teenager is shown biting a dog’s neck so hard the dog screams in pain.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals filed a complaint with the authorities. Since then the dogs have been taken into protective custody at Animal Care and Control.
The man and the teenager allegedly named themselves on the video, and police were able to identify them by their distinctive tattoos.
While Moore waits for his first court appearance in jail, the youth who has not been identified because of his age is on house confinement with an electronic monitoring device. The child is not allowed to have any contact with an animal. The teen’s grandparents state their grandson has never been in any trouble before and blame the terrible crime on Moore who they say was staying in their home while he was getting ready to enroll in college.
Reporting animal cruelty is extremely important. Pet Abuse.com states if you suspect animal cruelty, report it immediately to your local law enforcement agency. If you are unsure who to call, click here for the ASPCA’s Humane Law Enforcement Lookup.
If the city you live in does not have an Animal Control Division, jurisdiction is generally handled by the sheriff’s department or the local police.
In the worst case scenario call 911. Remember animal cruelty is a crime. Do not try to handle the situation yourself.
Many times animal cruelty can be associated with human-related crimes. Reporting animal cruelty could save an animal’s life and a human’s life as well.
