Quick, name the highest ranking American band on Billboard Magazine’s Top 100 selling artists of all time, a band that has sold over 100 million records, has had a Top 40 album in each of five decades, five consecutive number one albums and eleven number one singles. Need another hint? XXV of their XXXIII albums have been certified platinum. Ok, so you probably cheated and looked at this article’s headline and realized the answer was Chicago. The popular band returns to Phoenix, Arizona on Sunday, March 11, 2012 at 7:30 p.m. at the Celebrity Theatre. No doubt they may play a song or two you’ve heard.
Chicago was formed in 1967 and is currently touring with original band members Robert Lamm on keyboards and vocals, Lee Loughnane on trumpet, James Pankow on trombone and Walt Parazaider on woodwinds, as well as twenty seven year Chicago band member Jason Scheff on bass and vocals, Tris Imboden, who has now been with the band for twenty two years on drums, Keith Howland on guitar, only with the band a mere seventeen years, and newcomers, with only two years with the band, Lou Pardini on keyboards and vocals and Drew Hester on percussion. The “rock and roll band with horns,” has covered all sorts of musical genres including rock, jazz fusion, progressive rock, soft rock and power ballad rock.
In 2012, Chicago is dedicating their US tour to Paqui Kelly, a breast cancer survivor, close friend of the band, and wife of Notre Dame football coach Brian Kelly. For the third straight year, Chicago is teaming up with the American Cancer Society to give one of their fans an opportunity to sing onstage with the band at each tour stop. Fans will be able to bid on a package that includes a meet and greet with Chicago, two premium tickets, backstage passes and a special opportunity to sing the classic hit song “If You Leave Me Now” onstage with the band during their concert. Fans can bid now for the Phoenix show, or other upcoming performances, at www.cancer.org/singwithchicago. All proceeds will directly benefit the American Cancer Society’s fight against breast cancer. The winners from the 2010 promotion were so moved by the experience that they launched the Facebook group “I Sang with Chicago”, where they shared stories about their concerts, and videos of themselves on stage singing with the band.
