K-Lethal took to the jammer line, in the pack for Cincinnati was Sk8r-Kinney, Karma Krash, June with a Cleaver and Hannah Barbaric. Little A, jammer for Tampa made it out of the pack first . Taz Maniac and Lily the Kid held up K-Lethal not letting her through, but Little A was only able to put one point on the board. K-Lethal was scoreless.
Wheezy came to the line next with Penn Tupanga, Ruff’n the Passer, candyKICKass! and Buckhead Betty doing the blocking. Flirtin W. Disaster got out of the pack first putting up five points quickly and calling it off, Cincinnati was still scoreless and Tampa was leading 5-0.
Eight minutes into the game Cincinnati took the lead 9-7, the game was tight and every jam was of the scrum variety making it a physical game. The lead would not last as Flirtin’ with Disaster scored seven unanswered points while Cincinnati had two blockers standing in the penalty box, leaving K-Lethal with half a pack.
Tampa was stringing lead jams together, and keeping the Cincinnati jammers from scoring. Tampa was in the middle of a 26-0 run and just under 18 minutes left in the first half.
It was then that Cincinnati caught a wave of good fortune. K-Lethal pushed the Tampa blockers out 20 feet to be awarded lead jammer while Flirtin with Disaster was sent to the box. K scored 22 points getting Cincinnati to within 2 points at 33-31; just under sixteen minutes remained.
With Tampa and Cincinnati jammers exchanging time in the penalty box, K-Lethal took the most advantage scoring two grand slams while Penn Tupanga, Sk8R-Kinney and June with a Cleaver kept Tampa jammers behind them. Neither team was really breaking away, a great matchup.
Penalties were coming in spades for Tampa and Cincinnati, the referees were calling a tight game. Buckhead Betty was playing the role of wrecking ball taking out jammers and blockers and sending them to the concrete. Extending both hands and facing K-Lethal, Betty whipped her jammer around turn three with about four minutes left.. Cincinnati was ahead 68-57.
The half came to an end, with enough action for an entire bout. The penalty box looked like a bus stop bench and I am sure plenty of ice packs were used in the locker rooms. The score stood at 76-59 Cincinnati.
K-Lethal lead all jammers with 64 points, for Tampa Reeces Tear Ya to Pieces scored 28 points and, Little A scored 22 points.
Jammers K-Lethal and Little A would get things started in the second half, Karma Krash, Sk8r-Kinney, Penn Tupanga and Jungle Lacey blocking for Cincinnati.
Little A got a quick lead, a grand slam and called it off before K-Lethal could pick up any points of her own. Wheezy came to the line for the second jam and made her way first through the pack picking up two grand slams and scoring Cincinnati’s first points of the second half, 90-67 Cincinnati was ahead three minutes into the half.
From the halfway point through the first half until five minutes remaining in the game Cincinnati was in control. Tampa fought their way back taking the lead with Lunch Lady jamming, and Hannah Barbaric being sent to the penalty box. The boos hurled at the referees were loud, the crowd was not happy with Hannah being called for a penalty.
Lunch Lady would be sent to the box, and would start the next jam there, but not before putting Tampa ahead 132-124.
K-Lethal put Cincinnati ahead 146-141 and 1:12 left in the game. K took the jammer star again for the second time in a row, this would be the final jam..The whistle blew and Cincinnati stood still, wanted to =-eat as much clock as they could, with two Tampa blockers skating out front ten feet the whistle was blown. K-Lethal took lead jam skating to be sure the game clock was at zero.
Coming around turn four the game clock expired, but K’s back was to it and could not see. With her coach, the bench, and a number of fans all screaming for K to call the jam off she did and Cincinnati defeated Tampa 150-143.
A hard fought game that the fans loved, and while I do not know if K-Lethal’s 121 points is a record for Cincinnati it has to be close. The whole bout felt like a playoff game, every roller derby game should be that exciting.
