Of all the haunted places located throughout Cincinnati, the Cincinnati Observatory is one that is the last place anyone would think to be reputed to have paranormal occurrences. The Cincinnati Observatory was built back in 1873 with Greek Revival architecture. There is a smaller building known as the Mitchel Building who was named for Ormsby Macknight Mitchel who founded the observatory back in 1843. The building was built in 1903 housing the observatory’s original telescope built in Bavaria in 1845 which is still operational today.
The observatory has been reputed to be haunted by several spirits. There was a murder in 1986 that occurred when an ex-wife murdered her ex-husband by shooting him a total five times and the large rock on the side is known as “Blood Rock” but there was also a suicide in the building. A Dr. Elliott Smith had hung himself not to long after learning his son was missing an action in World War II. Low growls have been heard as well as a hot spot found in the circular office and old-fashioned style music at a distance. Some shadow figures have been seen as well.
