More great music is on tap in the Florida Keys later this week.
Internationally renowned pianist Jeffrey Chappell, an award-winning composer and veteran of stages in North and South America, Europe and Asia, is to appear as the featured soloist during the South Florida Symphony’s final Key West master concert of the 2011-12 season.
Chappell and the symphony, composed of several dozen of the United States’ eminent classical musicians, are scheduled to perform at 8 p.m. Thursday, March 8, at the Tennessee Williams Theatre, 5901 College Road on the Florida Keys Community College campus.
The unique orchestra, guided by award-winning conductor and Key West native Sebrina Maria Alfonso, began as the Key West Symphony and later expanded to offer concerts around South Florida.
During the Key West concert, Chappell is to display his artistry on Johannes Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 2 in B Flat. The symphony also is scheduled to perform the Florida premiere of Ellen Zwilich’s “Fantasy for Orchestra” as well as Antonin Dvorak’s “The Noon Witch” and “Festive Overture” by Dmitri Shostakovich.
Chappell has performed at notable U.S. venues including Carnegie Hall and Wolf Trap Park with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, and participated in music festivals ranging from Spoleto to France’s Musique d’Ete Festival. In addition, he is a recording artist and an acclaimed composer whose works combine elements of classical composition and American popular music.
Tickets for the symphony’s Key West performance with Chappell range from $25 to $75 per person, depending on seat location. The ticket price includes a post-concert reception where concert-goers can meet the conductor, orchestra members and Chappell.
