Since a nine month old dog named Zeus was killed within minutes by kennel workers at Hernando County Animal Services 2 weeks ago, there have been more attempts to kill helpless animals.
Below is a portion of a post from the Facebook page of the volunteers at Hernando County Animal Control.
“We have just been informed by one of our volunteers of MORE animal cruelty!!.. Cathy Evans and Chris Lee MUST be reassigned IMMEDIATELY to STOP THE CRUELTY.
Today a tiny–about 3 weeks old — kitten was put alone in a cage. We found out that the kennel staff put it there alone because they said the mother was bullying it. It is way too young to be put on its own. One of the volunteers immediately found a rescue for the kitten that has a mother weaning kittens.
This kitten would have died if not for the intervention of our volunteer.”
This most recent eyewitness account of the practices at Hernando County Animal Services raises even more questions.
What kind of person takes a 3 week old kitten away from its mother? Moreover, what is so special about Liana Teague, Mike Nickerson, Terri Blake, Cathy Evans, and Chris Lee, that they cannot be transferred or replaced by more competent workers?
At the very least, they should have been placed on administrative leave, pending the outcome of an investigation. But all still remain, as if nothing ever happened.
People have been fired from jobs for far less than what the aforementioned Hernando County employees have been accused of, so again I ask – why are their jobs being protected?
When the media is broadcasting allegations of animal abuse at HCAS, that should be more than enough to take action. And there are a growing number of members of the community demading that Nickerson, Teague and her staff, be placed in other positions,or let go.
Animal abuse by government employees is not like other political scandals. Killing animals triggers profound emotions in millions of people throughout the globe, whether they are pet owners or not.
The facts are the facts. According to the HCAS intake report, Zeus was killed 12 minutes after arriving at Brooksville shelter. No investigation in the world is going to change that. Therefore, I submit that delay tactics are yet another excuse to smother honesty and transparency, so the animal abuse can continue.
Why is there no one at the Hernando County government level with enough of a sense of right and wrong to put a stop to it?
Why are employees who obviously lack common sense and compassion still working around these animals?
If you want to make sure the County Commissioners understand that they must stop the cruelty and killing at HCAS immediately, contact them at the email addresses below and let them know what you think.
These people do not need to try to stop the killing and cruelty – they need to succeed.
