We are friends on Facebook with Dana Williams, who is a member of the Diamond Rio country band, and often listen in when his Dana Williams Show comes on the radio in Nashville.
Here is a recap of the Dana Williams show on WSM AM 650 radio in Nashville on Monday, April 16, 2012 at 2pm.
Today’s show was all about songs from the year 1994.
The Dana Williams show started off with Faith Hill singing and Dana said:
‘In 1994 we were all wondering who Faith Hill was, and we were all saying she sure is pretty!’.
Then we heard Diamond Rio (the band Dana Williams is a member of) singing ‘Love a Little Stronger’.
Mark Chesnut was singing ‘I just wanted you to know’.
Dana remarked: ‘It seemed every song Diamond Rio had out, Mark Chesnut had one out too, at the same time, and we had to fight him up the charts every time!’
Dana told his listeners: ‘The group, Little Texas, they were sitting right behind us at a CMA show, Brady came out and the girls were all screaming, Brady, Brady, Brady! (It was because he was single)…Little Texas was singing ‘My Love, My Love’.
We then heard ‘High Roller’ by Clint Black. (Nancy’s note – here is my own question: Whatever happened to those ‘distinctive’ voices in country music? Like Clint Black – you recognize his voice immediately when you hear him sing!)
Dana said : In 1994 Frank Sinatra won his Lifetime Achievement Award at the Grammy’s.’
Then Randy Travis singis ‘I Heard You Whisper My Name’.
Joe Diffie was singing ‘There’s Something Women Like about a Pickup Man’. (Nancy’s note – my own comment: Joe Diffie also has a distinctive voice in country music.)
Dana commented: ‘I had Joe Diffie come over to the house, and for two hours, we talked about lots of stuff and I recorded it. You can find that conversation on my show online at DanaWilliamsShow.com.’
Dana said: ‘Several other kinds of music, like Van Halen, was hot in 1994, and Pink Floyd did their last road tour before they broke up’.
Then Dana mentioned: ‘Here’s a girl, I remember her doing this song on the CMA Awards show, started it out with Brooks & Dunn, then ended it up with Little Richard, somehow she ended up kissing on Little Richard. Mary Chapin Carpenter sings ‘Shut Up and Kiss Me’.
Vince Gill then sings ‘I’ve Been Trying to Get Over You’ (‘It’ll take dying to get it done’)
‘This is the big one … so in this situation, she’s outta sight… I’m falling in Love’ which is by George Strait.
Then Dana said: ‘Eighteen years ago, what were you doing? I didn’t even have a son, now he’s about to turn 16, I don’t even remember what vehicle I was driving, I was never home, always on a bus coming to see some of you, or in a studio, or in my car heading to the bus.’
‘We’ve (Diamond Rio) got a song that we recorded then, got all the way to the last stage of recording, to the master stage, and thought we recorded this song too slow, thought we’d have to record the song over, cause we recorded it too slow. But Jimmy Oleander took his banjo, and put it in. Simple little banjo fixed everything.’
Then we heard Diamond Rio band singing the song Dana was referring to, ‘Night is Falling in My Heart’.
Alan Jackson was singing ‘Living on Love’.
Shenandoah was singing ‘If Bubba Can Dance (I Can Too)’.
Dana said: ‘Unbelieably great songs by Shenandoah.’
Toward the end of the show, Dana remarked: ”I’m on WSM 650 AM Radio and loving it. Thanks for letting me do this show, and I love to do it.’
‘Please go to danawilliamsshow.com, and you can call me, you can gripe, you can praise, whatever you want to do’.
‘One final song. This girl, we used to tour, see each other lots of times back in those days. Now she is Mrs. Brooks. Talking about Trisha Yearwood with ‘X’s and O’s’.’
Then Dana Williams signs off with this: ‘See you next time’.
