A special school performance is scheduled on Friday, May 4th, at 10:00 a.m. From the escapades of Dr. Coppelius to the humorous misunderstandings between Swanhilde and Franz, DTT’s staging of this light-hearted comedy promises to delight your senses and tickle your funny bone! Tickets are now on sale through MTSU’s Tucker Theatre website or by calling Dance Theatre of Tennessee at (615) 391-5500.
“‘Coppelia‘ offers absolute delight to ballet newcomers and families, as well as Dance Theatre of Tennessee’s most seasoned patrons,” says DTT Artistic Director Christopher Mohnani. “The dancing is lovely, while the characterization and comic timing of this classic will keep audiences enchanted the entire time.”
Presented in three acts, “Coppelia” is a comedic ballet based on the book of ETA Hoffman, the same author of another wonderful ballet – “The Nutcracker.” The story revolves around a mysterious toy-maker, Dr. Coppelius, who lives in the town square. Dr. Coppelius shares his house with a life-sized doll, Coppelia, that he created to keep himself company. Every day Coppelia is seated with her book on the front balcony of the workshop. His neighbor, Swanhilde, and her fiance, Franz, believe Coppelia is real. Franz falls in love with the beautiful doll. The adventure begins as he and Swanhilde sneak into the toy-maker’s workshop, separately, to meet Coppelia.
Dance Theatre of Tennessee’s staging of “Coppelia” promises to captivate with all new costumes of brilliant color and design, sets and scenery by the George Verdak Performance Trust and the talented artists of DTT. Children are encouraged to bring their favorite doll to the Sunday Matinee for a doll parade held at 1:30 p.m. Ticket holders for both the Saturday and Sunday performances will be able to register to win an American Girl doll complete with ballerina attire.
