Day one of the 11th annual Michael Jordan Celebrity Invitational is off to a great start. The biggest names in the worlds of sports and entertainment flock to a small piece of paradise located in North Las Vegas to raise money for charity, as well as play this exclusive golf course.
I arrived early, just to walk around this beautiful course myself. While walking around Shadow Creek, I spoke with many guests who were not at Shadow Creek for the Celebrity sightings, but to see have a glance at the exclusive golf course. One gentleman told me at least 3 United States Presidents are members of Shadow Creek. How cool is that?
Walking to the first tee, I strolled by the driving range. The driving range was a smorgasbord of celebrities warming up. As I snapped a few photos of the warm ups, a pheasant interrupted me. It squawked and ruffled its feathers as it strutted by the celebrities, not worrying about the little white balls being hammered into oblivion.
Talk show host Maury Povich drove away as I took my position to shoot some photos. Cedric the Entertainer steps up, and the crowds cheer him on. Louder than most of the other cheering fans, a Sammy Davis Jr. impersonator was screaming encouragement to the celebrities without breaking character. I wonder if this only happens in Las Vegas?
Celebrities like Win McMurry, Brian Baumgartner, Joe Morgan and Ken Griffey, Jr. were all in great spirits as they tee’d off. This day was going great. Perfect weather, and everyone was in such a great mood it was infectious.
I took a moment and spoke with a young boy who was nearby. I asked him who he was waiting to see. He quickly responded that he hoped to see Michael Jordan and Wayne Gretzky.
I heard music and knew that only one of the golf carts, to my knowledge, had a sound system. The boy’s face glowed as the powder blue golf cart crested the hill. Michael Jordan had arrived.
Some fans watched a particular hole, while others followed their favorite celebrity through the course. The interaction between the celebrities and their fans was great. I was shocked when Sugar Ray Leonard grabbed my shoulder, and started to talk to me about how wonderful his team was.
The way it works for first two days of the Michael Jordan Celebrity Invitational is each celebrity plays with 4 people for a two day Celebrity-Amateur Competition. Saturday is the start of the Celebrity Scramble. This is where all the celebrities will be paired off and will compete against the other pairs of celebrities to see who walks away the winner of the Michael Jordan Celebrity Invitational.
Regardless of which celebrity group wins the invitational. The true winner of this event will be the charities. With large checks being presented to UC San Diego Nevada Cancer Institute, Opportunity Village, Make-A-Wish Foundation, James Jordan Foundation as well as Cats Care.
Daily admission to the Michael Jordan Celebrity Invitational is only $30, and it is fun for everyone. Children under 16 are free with a paying adult.
