In spring, a young (and middle-aged and above) New Yorker’s fancy lightly turns to thoughts of outdoor dining. The sidewalk tables at some cafes open as early as March 10, inviting stalwart city dwellers to take part in the gustatory equivalent of the Polar Bear Club, but now that the trees are beginning to leaf out why not treat yourself to an evening of city lights, open sky, and … and …
Katz’s pastrami egg rolls with lemongrass mustard sauce and a glass of bubbly? Sounds a tad curious, yes, but it’s among the offerings at the Empire Hotel Rooftop, which apart from being open-air, is currently available at a 45% savings off the usual price. A deal at Gilt City New York installs you and five of your closest amigos at a table that is adorned, upon your arrival, with four appetizers, a bottle of champers, and six cocktails. The lounge features live jazz on Monday nights and DJs Thursday through Saturday. The tab, ordinarily $350, will set you back $190 (which split six ways comes to less than $32 a head).
Oh, and if the pastrami egg rolls aren’t your cup of tea, there are always tuna tacos drizzled with wasabi cream, chicken and shrimp dumplings, and other less outlandish dishes to fall back on. (Just don’t too far: It’s a 12-story drop.) Empire Hotel Rooftop. 44 West 63rd Street, 212-265-7400.
