It is nice to know that Smashburger can readily accommodate those not keen on meat. In addition to the salads, vegetarian at Smashburger means a black-bean patty that can be customized a number of different ways. It starts with the Spicy Baja Black Bean Burger, made specially for those carnivore-nots. This burger will awaken the senses with ingredients like pepper jack cheese, guacamole, lettuce, tomato, onion, spicy chipotle mayonnaise and slices of fresh jalapeños on a chipotle-laced bun. And for only $4.99, everyone can enjoy a bite of this beast.
The patty itself might excite more than the typical veggie burger diner. It begins with black beans molded together by hand and, like the hamburgers, is smashed, seared and seasoned on a flat grill. The result includes a pleasing crust that provides additional flavor and texture for the sandwiches.
Aside from the Spicy Baja Black Bean Burger, you can choose from any of the hamburger or chicken sandwich options to dress up your meatless meal with the simple substitution of a veggie patty. For the Houston Smashburger outlets, this means ten more varied choices. Beginning with burgers, there is Classic with Cheese, in which the patty is accompanied with American cheese, ketchup, lettuce, tomato, red onion, pickles and the zesty Smash Sauce held together by a soft egg bun. If that’s nearly what you are in the mood for but not quite the whole bundle, there is the similar All American with Cheese. With this one, American cheese, ketchup, yellow mustard, onions, pickles and an egg bun join the patty.
The Texas version of Smashburger’s burger exemplifies the regional popularity of yellow mustard. A hefty dollop of mustard precludes the need for ketchup for these customers. An egg bun, American cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion and pickles also play a large role. Two other Texas favorites, jalapeños and barbecue, come together in the Jalapeño BBQ sandwich. Melted cheddar cheese, applewood smoked bacon, jalapeño slices grilled with garlic, barbecue sauce and a pile of crunchy haystack onions come with the familiar egg bun. This is probably not for the faint of heart.
If you like most of those ingredients but can do without the heat, the BBQ, Bacon & Cheddar might be a perfect addition by subtraction. It is very similar to the Jalapeño BBQ, but without the peppers. This sandwich is made with barbecue sauce, bacon, cheddar cheese and the haystack onions on an egg bun. Rounding out the hamburger options is the classic-sounding Mushroom Swiss. The patty is topped with garlic, sautéed mushrooms, Swiss cheese and mayonnaise on an egg bun.
From the chicken sandwiches, there is the Classic with red onions, pickles, lettuce, tomato and mayonnaise on a multi-grain bun. Though chicken might be its perfect pairing, you can make the Buffalo sandwich vegetarian. It includes Frank’s® RedHot® Buffalo sauce with crumbled blue cheese, lettuce, tomato and mayonnaise on an egg bun. The BBQ Ranch provides another excuse for barbecue sauce. Lose the bacon, add a veggie patty and pile high with haystack onions, lettuce, tomato and ranch dressing for a delectable, vegetarian-friendly taste of mesquite. Last on the list is the Avocado Club with avocado, bacon, lettuce, tomato, ranch and mayonnaise on a multi-grain bun. Again, the take-away of bacon and substitution of a black-bean patty will do just the trick for your taste buds.
If none of these are exactly what you’re looking for, get creative and make your own. There are three different buns from which to choose, seventeen sauces and toppings for free, nine additional toppings for a charge and six various cheeses. Smashburger allows for many ways to enjoy a vegetarian burger.
