March 7, 2012. Regent students are expressing their confusion and heartbreak as they recently found out eight of the school’s top notch Undergraduate Department faculty members are being released not to return in the Fall. Regent University is a private Christian four year liberal arts college located in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Founded by local evangelist, Pat Robertson, the school is designed to be a place of transformation. The school’s motto is Christian Leadership to Change the World.
In support for the eight faculty members, students established a Facebook page called We Support the Eight in hopes to receive answers and in protest of the release of these instructors. The administrators of the page clearly express they are not attempting to create angry protest but “compilations and expressions from the Regent community at large”. Those who support this movement are encouraged to write a large figure“8” on both hands or tie a black ribbon around the left wrist. The recent update indicated discussions with the Regent Undergraduate Council (RUC), a group of students who are entrusted with creating open communications between school administration members and students. RUC reported back the following:
… [W]e went through proper channels and spoke with the Dean. We have been listening to student concerns since everyone found out. RUC wants to help the students have a voice to the administration. We need to be unified and respectful and as student government we are doing things in a proper manner (https://www.facebook.com/#!/supportthe8)
RUC stated they spoke with Dr. Moreno, the Undergraduate Dean of Regent University, confirming the release of the eight professors.
Although the page is meant to address issues dealing with the release of the faculty members… the page administrator is requesting all issues be privately messaged rather than displayed on the page forum. There is a divide in this method as some students prefer a much more open forum and others do not mind the privacy so long as the issues are addressed. Members of the We Support the Eight plan on meeting later this evening to discuss further issues and updates.
As of yet there is no explanation as to why these eight faculty members were released.
***Update: The Daily Runner, a student runned newspaper has provided the names of at least six of the instructors who were released from Regent Undergrad: Dr. William Lyons, Dr. Ru Wideman, Derek Martin, Pam Miller, Dr. Katy Attanasi, and Dr. Catherine Cutcher.
