A day before Mayor Rahm Emanuel is to continue bending Chicago city councilmen’s arms to pass his speed camera proposal at City Hall, the Chicago Tribune reports that a huge Emanuel supporter and donor as well as Emanuel’s former campaign manager – Greg Goldner – will profit extremely well from the unpopular speed cameras that are to be placed throughout the city of Chicago.
Greg Goldner has been involved with Emanuel-support since Emanuel ran for Congress for the first time years ago. And as recently as Emanuel’s run for Chicago mayor in 2011, Goldner was still supporting Emanuel. Goldner was tagged as a cash supporter for aldermanic candidates who supported Emanuel.
If that doesn’t sound like Chicago politics as usual already, there’s more. According to former Chicago Tribune stories, Goldner was deeply involved with rallying public support for Emanuel’s efforts to reform the Chicago Public Schools when the mayor needed visible support for lengthening the school day.
Basically, to Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel who ran for mayor just a year ago as a candidate of reform and transparency in government, Greg Goldner has been the kind of political associate that every politician wants in order to have success in politics – totally supportive with money in hand and money on-hand.
- READ: Emanuel still won’t produce data to prove his speed cams are for safety
As recently as yesterday, Chicago city councilmen made headlines with their non-answered calls for data to support the need for speed cameras throughout the city. Councilmen say their constituents are very opposed to the speed cameras, and the aldermen need some solid data to present to their neighborhoods’ residents that support the need for the cameras.
To date, Emanuel has refused over and over again to release his alleged data that says the speed cameras are about safety – not about making money for the city.
Now, this can be reworded to say that data is needed to support the contention that the speed cameras are about safety – not about making money for the city and ‘Emanuel’s political ally.’
With the appearance of impropriety building throughout the past half-year regarding Emanuel’s undying need to have the speed cameras, the Chicago Tribune report regarding the Greg Goldner-connection becomes a very strong concern.
Greg Goldner is a consultant whose company, Resolute Consulting, supplies Chicago with the red light cameras operating throughout the city. It has been reported on WLS-AM radio that these red light cameras have the ability to become speed cameras as well – by the flip of a switch.
The bottom line is that Greg Goldner, the long-time supporter of Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s political life and career, is in a position to make tens of millions of dollars off of Emanuel’s speed cameras that are on-track to be posted throughout 47% of Chicago’s roadways by 2013.
- READ: Speed Camera Options that are Safer for Children and Not Costly to Drivers
Emanuel still refuses to discuss speed camera options that are safer for children and not costly to Chicago drivers. The options suggested include speed bumps which make it impossible for vehicles to travel faster than 20 miles an hour near a school or park -and the proposal to block off streets around schools during the school day as is being done already in many suburban towns already. There is obviously no safer option than simply closing a school’s streets to traffic throughout the school day. No cars – nobody hit. Yet, Emanuel refuses to entertain any options that do not involve money.
Additionally, Goldner, Emanuel’s long-time supporter and the city will profit very well off of city drivers if Emanuel gets his speed cams.
UPDATE: Hours ‘after’ this story came out, Emanuel spoke publicly about the Chicago Tribune’s story. He said that Goldner’s firm will have to bid on the project like any other firm. Of course, the definitive word here is ‘after.’
COMMENTARY: As Emanuel continues to spew comments of his transparency and openness, the question – of course – is why he continually waits to be challenged by the media before attempting to appear open and transparent. Next question is: how long will it take Emanuel to finally realize that Chicagoans are not as stupid and as gullible as he apparently believes they are.
SPEED CAMS ARE NOT NEEDED FOR SAFETY IN CHICAGO! There are better options. OPENNESS, TRANSPARENCY, AND HONESTY IN THE MAYOR’S OFFICE IS WHAT IS NEEDED IN CHICAGO!
