Troy “Troyzan” Robertson was a fan-favorite and one of the instant stand-outs of Survivor: One World. He really created some excitement down the stretch, going head-on alone against the entire tribe.
Unfortunately, the underdog doesn’t always come out on top. Troyzan had put his trust in Kim after the tribal switch, and realized too late that Kim was in control of the game. He won Immunity for himself last week, but this week was not able to win the ring toss challenge against Tarzan, the only other male contestant in the game.
Even after losing though, Troyzan was not done fighting. When he found out a few votes were going to be cast Christina’s way, he concocted a plan to turn the tables on her, but the plan rested in the hands of Kat. Kat seemed truly affected by Troyzan’s constant gamesmanship, but in the end Kat played it safe and sided with her female alliance, effectively sending Troyzan to the currently all-male jury.
Read on for the exit interview with Troyzan:
Sorry to see you go.
Troyzan: Me too!
Well, I was really rooting for you so it was a sad to see you leave.
That bums me out actually, because I actually feel responsible for people’s happiness (laughs).
What was your reaction when the women began celebrating once you had lost last night’s Immunity Challenge?
I didn’t like it, I didn’t really care one way or another I just thought they were being smug. Especially Chelsea and Sabrina. I just thought that I wanted to get so much in their head. I just wanted to play with their minds, or have them be afraid of me. Because I was all by myself I was trying everything possible. Then they weren’t that good at challenges, so who were they to say anything?
What was the key factor that led to the downfall of the men’s alliance?
Well, people keep talking about this guy and girl alliance thing, once we did the merge there really wasn’t a guy and girl alliance. The guy and girl thing for me was really out once Colton had gotten sick. Because when we merged it was 6-6, but it really wasn’t 6-6. Mike was going to vote with the girls, so Mike was a girl. Jay in hindsight, he was always going to go with the girls, you know, because he was in love with Kim and Chelsea, and he was a girl. And Tarzan as well. Once he figured out [the male alliance] wasn’t going to happen, he was with Alicia the whole way. So he was a girl. Had Colton stayed, it would have been guy/girl. But once he left that was all out the window.
Why do you feel Kat ultimately sided with Kim and the others?
Because she doesn’t know the game 100%. I don’t believe she had seen a lot of Survivor, and didn’t really know how to make a big move on her own. She just trusted the very first person that she probably met, which was Kim, so she just stayed with her. And that was it. She was basically playing the game in fear, which is how most of the people out there are playing. Playing just to stay around as opposed to playing to win. There’s a big difference.
What was it about Kim that made her so effective in deceiving and controlling others and even yourself at one point?
Kim is very low-key and she really doesn’t talk a whole lot. And you have to remember we’re out there 24 hours and we’re talking about a lot of things other than Survivor, especially at night. You’re talking about your life and this and that. So she was very good at talking about what she does, and she was very calming. The girls, especially the ones she was playing with, didn’t know very much about Survivor, and this strategizing thing, so it was very easy for her to influence people. But she is a deceptive person, and she’s a very good liar. And I’ve said this before, but out there, what you see is really who we are. Deep down inside, that’s who we are. If you have the ability to lie and deceive out there than you have the ability to do it on the outside world. Everybody that you see out there, they are who they are.
Had you have gone on a big run and won a bunch of Immunity Challenges, were you thinking who you wanted to sit next to at the end?
Oh yeah, for sure. I wanted someone who I knew the jury couldn’t give their vote to, like the super-coat-tailer. Christina or Tarzan. Those are the two I would have taken.
Being a fan of the game, you have definitely witnessed the “bitter jury” and how they have selected winners. Without revealing anything (of course), what criteria did you in picking a winner?
I look for qualities, like did this person strategize in the way that I thought was fair or unfair? Did this person coat-tail? Did this person work to get there, or who really worked to get there? I didn’t base it on some things I’ve seen on the show in the past, like some people base it on how good someone is only at challenges, or how good of a speech they give at the end. I didn’t base it on that.
What has the reaction been like from fans and family watching from home?
It really has been surprisingly super-positive. Even after last night, the amount of emails and Twitter followers, I’d say it’s about 99% positive. Of course, there were a few haters in there. But the people that know me, my family and friends, they were really like wow, that was really you 100%. And it really was. There was nothing fake about it, I played 100% what you see is what you get. That person out there Troyzan? You saw Troy Robertson, 100%. But it really is over-whelming, there are people saying wow you should be an All-Star, or one of the greatest Survivors I’ve ever seen, or mentioning my name in the same sentence as Richard Hatch or Russell Hantz or Colby Donaldson. I was like wow, really? (laughs)
There was a rumor floating around that you may have a famous guest with you at the Live Reunion Show after the Finale…can you tell us anything about this?
Well I did a NY Yankee/Miami Marlins spring training game here [Troyzan is a professional photographer], and Derek Jeter, I’ve shot with him before, but before the game he just ran up to me and said, dude I’m watching the show and it’s frickin’ crazy! And I was like what? (laughs) He walks right off the field, and I was like really? And he was like, yah I have my family watching it, but don’t tell me what happened last night because I haven’t seen it yet! So I realized, well this guy really is a fan, he likes the show. He said he wanted to go to the Finale if he wasn’t working. He said I’ll be there if I don’t have to work. I actually checked, and he has a game in NY that day, but I think he may be free that night, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed that he may actually want to go. (laughs)
