Michigan’s award winning wines are not limited to the lower half of the state. Crossing over the Mackinaw Bridge that connects the state’s two peninsulas, you can expect to find a handful of wineries that have joined the growing wine industry in Michigan.
Threefold Vine Winery and Vineyard is part of a working family-run farm located in the south central area on the Garden Peninsula. This 22 mile peninsula extends out into Lake Michigan and is bordered by Lake Michigan on the east and by Big Bay de Noc on the west. The Green family started by devoting 4 acres of their 470 acre farm to the growing of grapes on the shallow soil over fragmented limestone with the peninsula’s unique microclimate. The results years later are some superb award winning wines consisting of five red table wines, one white table wine, one rose, various honey wines, fruit wines, and dessert wines. All their wines are made from Upper Peninsula Michigan grown grapes. The Threefold Vine Winery is open for tours where you can see how the wine is produced from the grapes growing in the vineyard, to harvesting and processing the wine depending on the time of the year you visit. They have a large and interesting tasting room available on site so you can sample their exciting wines they grow.
Also located on the Garden Peninsula is the Garden Bay Winery. Their goal is simply to produce small batches of delicious wines from Michigan fruit. They’re a small winery and their little business is worked by people born and raised in the Upper Peninsula. Their ‘can-do’ attitude and independent spirit is reflected in their international awarded fruit wines. Enjoy blueberry wine made from 100% Michigan grown blueberries, raspberry, strawberry and blackberry wines. Also coming soon is cranberry wine and in July two unique wines; a raspberry/strawberry blend and Garden Riot, an interesting blend of all fruits. They also offer several delicious Michigan grape wines. You can taste these wines in their Garden Peninsula tasting room in Munising, or coming soon to Mackinaw City.
Nestled in the heart of the Upper Peninsula, the Mackinaw Trail Winery is located in Manistique on the waterfront. These exceptional wines are produced from 100% Michigan grown grapes by winemakers Ralph and Dustin Stabile. They offer red wines, several white wines, fruit and dessert wines including their gold medal best-of-class ‘Razzberry’, a delightful sweet raspberry wine. You can sample their wines at any one of their three unique tasting rooms in Manistique, Mackinaw City and Petoskey. The wine is also sold extensively in shops throughout the lower and upper peninsulas.
