Addie’s, across the Route 355 from the White Flint Mall in Rockville, is a a very nice restaurant. Now that the weather is getting warmer again, I am looking forward to enjoying a glass of white (or red, for that matter) wine on their front patio. And may be, just may be, a plate of delicious sauteed trout. And – definitely – a Caesar salad.
That Ceasar salad… I discovered it this past winter, and for a while it felt like nirvana was within reach. A perfect dinner: the salad, followed by a baby rockfish brough to to the table in an almost visible cloud of garlic and rosemary smell. And a side of fries… oh man, those fries. I never liked the thicker cuts much; remember Houston’s? They had great shoestring fries. Best in Maryland, I used to say. Now Houston’s is gone, but Addie’s fries were so much better! Thin, crunchy but not dry, salty but not too much so… A perfect dinner, as mentioned above.
Last Friday, alas, the rockfish was not on the menu. And neither were the fries. Apparently not only had Nate Waugman, the chef, left for the Mealey’s Table in New Market, he also hired away the sous chef. But the fries, how did he manage to take the fries with him?
There are still plenty of interesting dishes on the menu. The mussels, of course (all of Black’s restaurants have great mussels.) The aforementioned trout. The bronzini, that our waiter recommended as the replacement for the rockfish. The hamburger, very similar to that at the nearby Black Market bistro in Garret Park. The hamburger, by the way, can hold its own against the much hyped version at the Central Michel Richard. (Of cource, Central has the out-of-this-world Napoleon, but that’s the subject for a separate article.) And there is still that great Caesar salad, tasty and flavorful, combining whole and chopped Romaine leaves, nice garlicky dressing and topped with restrained white anchovies. And apparently there are plans to convert the cozy side patio into a beer garden (a very smart move)
So there is still a lot to like about Addie’s. And, on the restaurant’s web site, the menu still offesr the rockfish with the side of fries… But I am afraid it is just the case of an old PDF…
