It seems that the frenzy over The Hunger Games has died down a bit, at least for now. After slipping from the top spot at the box office, The Hunger Games has also fallen from first place on the USA Today best seller list.
After 16 weeks at #1, The Hunger Games is now ranked fifth on the list — though its worth noting that the second book in the series, Catching Fire, remains in second place. The third and final book in the trilogy, Mockingjay, is fourth.
The #1 spot is now held by Fifty Shades of Grey by E.L. James, the so-called “mommy porn” book that got its start as Twilight fan fiction online before the author changed the characters’ names and published it as a trilogy. Another of James’ books, Fifty Shades Darker, is also in the top five, coming in at third.
There are currently over 36.5 million copies of The Hunger Games books in print in the United States. Already a best-seller, fervor over the movie adaptation helped books book sales even higher.
And while news about the series has slowed in the last few weeks, the fan frenzy is expected to pick back up again as news about the movie’s sequel, Catching Fire, comes out. At last word, Lionsgate had offered Francis Lawrence the job of director, though he still has not officially accepted. Fans are also eagerly anticipating the casting of several new characters, most especially Finnick Odair. Filming on Catching Fire is expected to begin in August.
