This summer NBC will be debuting a new Canadian medical drama, positively titled Saving Hope. The series stars Daniel Gillies, Erica Durance, and Michael Shanks as good-hearted, though somewhat cocksure surgeons at Hope-Zion Hospital. When Shanks’ Chief of Surgery Charlie Harris ends up in a coma following a bad accident, the hospital is left in chaos. Fellow surgeon (and Charlie’s fiance) Alex (Durance) is in shock, and the newly arrived “golden boy” surgeon Joel (Gillies) is thrown into action mode before he even knows the ways of their world. Sound intense? Oh, it gets more complicated!
It turns out Charlie, in his coma, is able to roam the hospital halls in spirit form. No one living can see him, but the dead that have recently passed on his own operating tables can. He isn’t sure exactly what’s going on– or if and how he can really help those he left behind– but all of this makes for one melodrama cross between Awake and A Gifted Man.
Admittedly, we have not yet seen the pilot (a full advance review should be coming soon, though, so stay tuned!), but our initial reaction to a clip reel debuted at NBC-Universal’s Summer Press Day in Los Angeles last week showed a lot of heart, which is exactly what series star Durance said drew her to the project in the first place.
Meanwhile, Gillies called the show “deeply human, as well as mystical,” noting the combination of genre elements (a spirit figure!) with very real, emotional drama (loss of a loved one, high stakes, life or death professional situations).
“If it was just a medical show, it would have a lot of clout,” Gillies said of his new project. “But there’s an extra dimension here.”
No pun intended, we’re sure.
