For years now I’ve used a well known little application to pull down source material and videos, game sequences and news reels from the web to genreate and create many of the video satires and still images that have been in my collections. The application is known as FRAPS, and it is a small wonder. My YouTube account is teaming with examples of what this $34.00 (a decade ago) app allows me to create. It sits like pirates in a cove, around the next turn, quiet and patient, until the press of an F9 or F10 and it’s media captured. For example: on the Windows Media Player the visuals are set to ‘G-Force Trial Version’ and music is playing, the yellow FRAPS counter is spinning around up in the upper left hand corner. After the Trial Version ads go away, I depress F9 and movies start generating in Fraps’ Movie folder. With earlier versions of Studio, it used to be that I had to cross filter the final .avi through Windows Movie Maker to get them to a format that Pinnacle Studio 10.8 would work with – not these days, now I take the raw video and audio into Studio 14 and layer it behind my group of street urchins on ‘green screen’ at the apartment complex and Tah-Dah!
There are those rare moments in cinema, when low budget B&Ws from the 40s or 50s or even current day movie trailers (they’re throwing them at you from everywhere), could’ve used the exact script that has just popped into your head to evolve this work of art from the schlock caper in grab-a-teen-buck-cinema that it was aimed at being, into the uproarious comedy that, in its heart, it was truely born to be! Those are times when I even join in the fray, “…hold there and open them chests into the Movies folder with Ye!” …or some such nonsense. As I said previous, some examples here:
I realise while making $9.00 an hour at my day job, I’m not getting rich, but even so, these works are for mere creative pleasure – they are not being mass produced or marketed for profit in any way, which is, in an of itself, liberating. FRAPS enables me to allow my inner Loki to have his fun and the record companies and Hollywood know they can’t get blood from a turnip(so why go after the vanishing middle class worker), as I play at what simple pleasure this piece of code affords me.
…and now The Red Baron (frozen pizza company), has given me a month long subscription to Marvel Digital Comics Unlimited – (bow)thank you Baron! The concept of digital comics, always seemed to be like when your parents used to be stingy about letting you have a quarter to run down to the drugstore and get the latest DareDevil, but Jimmy’s dad promoted reading with his kid and tossed him two bits now and again! You had to read the latest issue over JIMMY’S shoulder, then he got to take it home (?issues…look into it, hhmmm?). “Bye, thanks for the $9.99 + tax, bye, see ya next month!” …..yeah right, so I F10 the hell outta it and create a design page in The PrintShop Deluxe 23.1 (for Windows 7), switch panels around, handcrop images, superimpose, layer – create and my mind is swimming with vision.
I feel that the empowerment of young people is of the utmost importance in these times, when so much is grabbing at them and pulling them one way or another. Whereby; they need ‘self imaging’ to be about their importantance: just the way we were born. Not being molded by media, but molders of their world, shapers and movers. Strengthened about themselves from within to withstand this vast convergence that is coming. There is a powerful convergence occuring and all things are being drawn together and accessible to all, digitally.
Finally, even the profile picture you find on this byline at nextooze.com – FRAPS. So much fun in such a little package! Thank you folks at Beepa for your work and I apologise to all the ad houses in Manhatten that crank out, music indusrty (I’m not see’n a dime of it neither), but in a way, thank you for that, which has become the fodder for my creative facility, you do beautiful work.
