Individuals participating in any of the following public assistance programs are eligible for a free SafeLink Wireless phone and 250 minutes free per month:
- Food Stamps, TANF, Low Income Home Energy Assistance
- National Free Lunch
- Federal Housing/Section 8
- Or individuals may qualify simply based on their gross monthly income
This service is provided through the federal program Lifeline. The Lifeline program was approved and implemented by the FCC in 1984, initially allowing low income individuals to receive landline phone services at affordable costs.
In 2011, the FCC approved Tracfone Wireless, Inc. to provide the benefits of Lifeline through wireless services. As a result, Tracfone created SafeLink Wireless. Qualified individuals will receive a free phone and free minutes monthly. No overages, hidden fees, or contracts! Customers cannot go over their minutes however, they can add extra minutes if needed. Text messaging is included; each text is equivalent to 1 minute of usage.
