How long does it take to set up and organize a great garage sale? Can it be done in a day or two, or do you need a week, a month or even more?
The answer may be obvious to some. It depends. It depends on the quantity and the quality of stuff for sale at the garage sale. It depends on the number of helpers and the available resources. It also depends on the amount of effort the organizers want to expend and undertake to “get ‘er done.”
There is no doubt about it. The volunteers at the Pembroke Hill School use their time wisely and well in the organization and execution of a garage sale. They have had a lot of practice organizing and hosting a garage sale. Their version of a garage sale, termed, the “Clothesline Sale,” has been a Kansas City tradition for nearly 60 years.
Parents, students, staff and alumni work tirelessly and thoughtfully to host the annual event. They collect donations throughout the entire school year. It takes most of the daylight hours for an entire week to transform a gym from a gym to a garage sale “Mecca.”
Yes, there is an entire gym full of purchasable fare. All items are marked and color-coded with prices. New and used items are showcased. The treasure includes jewelry, collectibles and artwork. There is standard fare, such as clothes (kids, mens and womens), books, DVDs/CDs, toys and sporting equipment. A separate area houses furniture.
Not only is there stuff, but it tends to be high-end, brand-name stuff. It is presented neatly and cleanly. Items are well displayed on hangers, and on racks, bins, tables and other shelving, with a retail flair and flavor.
The 60th annual “Clothesline Sale” is open, without admission or entry fees, on Friday, April 20, 2012, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. It continues on Saturday, April 21, starting at 9 a.m. and concludes when the merchandise is gone. There is usually a bag sale just before that, although the timing of that is not a certainty, and the gym is emptied of all people before the bag sale begins. You can (and may) begin this garage sale adventure earlier, on Thursday at 4 p.m. if you are willing to pay an entrance fee of $5.00.
Pembroke Hill is located on the corner of Shawnee Mission Parkway, Ward Parkway and State Line Road in Kansas City. (The specific school address is 5121 State Line Road.) Parking is or can be tight. There is often a lot of walking, especially from the check out to your car, post purchase. It is mostly indoors. There is not a parcel check. Cash and credit cards are accepted.
Let your garage sale Examiner know if you agree that this is one of the best garage sales in the metropolitan area. See you there!
