March 2012 was filled with a variety of news stories, including headlines related to 1980s actor Kirk Cameron and his statements related to homosexuality, the Pope’s decree in regards to gay marriage, reactions from the school system to a lesbian principal, the institutionalization of the young German transgender girl Alexis Kaminsky, and an increase in large corporations throughout the globe supporting the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender (GLBT) community be heard and respected in their plight for equal marriage rights, or the recognition of same-sex marriage.
When actor Kirk Cameron from the 1980s show Growing Pains spoke publically on his thoughts related to homosexuality, a strong backlash from the GLBT community ensued. Unhappy at many levels, advocates including GLAAD, chimed in. The founder of the Christian Broadcasting Network Pat Robertson also shared similar views during March 2012. Big companies openly shared their mission to support the GLBT community in the struggle for the legalization of gay marriage, equal marriage rights, and same-sex unions.
