Whedonites from all over the Denver metro area converged on Ernie’s Bar and Pizza on 44th St. Monday night to test their knowledge of modern day mythologies like Buffy, Angel and Firefly. There was a truly impressive level of knowledge on display, as the teams answered some truly obscure questions that left Whedon fans with a casual level of knowledge stumped. Just because you’ve watched every episode of Buffy and can sing along to Dr. Horrible doesn’t mean you’ll be able to compete with this crowd. Some of the team names referenced really specific lines and obscure moments from all kinds of Whedon works, including “The Cure for Puppet Cancer,” “Five Bucks on the Merman,” “The Team Name Is My Penis”, and “The Terrifying Space Monkeys.”
For eight rounds, 35 teams fought it out, with rounds based on the collected words and deeds of Nathan Fillion, musical numbers from the Whedonverse, Chinese swear words, and extremely minor demons, mechanics, potential slayers, and cyber-pagans (yes really), among many other topics. All of the above-mentioned teams did exceptionally well, scoring in the top five. However, in the end it was the Terrifying Space Monkeys who won the evening, with a truly mind-blowing grand total of 85 points. This team brought home a very shiny stack of money, and the runners-up made do with prizes like beer coolers, bar stools and gift certificates.
This was truly an epic quiz, folks. My pretty floral bonnet is off to you.
