Fox News contributor and right-wing radio host Laura Ingraham has never been loath to race-bait and attack liberals and Democrats – but her latest smears, on her radio show with guest Ann Coulter (race-baiter divine), reached new heights in irony: “When you have celebrities tweeting addresses of people and NBC essentially turning into the ‘whip people into a frenzy network.’ This is beyond irresponsible . . . Something violent could happen toward an innocent person or a family member of George Zimmerman if not himself, and who’s complicit here if something does happen? (Emphasis added.)
Ah, memories are short, and selective, in right-wingnut la la land: How about the white supremacist hacker breaking into Trayvon Martin’s Facebook and e-mail accounts? Or maybe Tucker Carlson’s “news” website, the Daily Caller, ought to be a little more journalistically careful about publishing images that aren’t even Trayvon Martin. Twitchy, the website of nasty, tasteless, hateful conservative blogger Michelle Malkin, published a phony picture of Trayvon Martin making an obscene gesture next to a photo of a clean-cut Zimmerman in a suit and tie, with the caption: “Recognize these two people? If you don’t, we’ll help you out. The man on the left is George Zimmerman, the man accused of murdering the boy on the right, Trayvon Martin. The mainstream media won’t show you these two photos because they convey a message thaqt no one else wants to take into considerations.”
The picture these people are trying to paint, of course, that Trayvon Martin was some kind of thug, is as phony as the depiction of George Zimmerman as a mild-mannered businessman. In fact, a former co-worker of Zimmerman, who worked with him as security for “illegal” house parties, depicted Zimmerman as a “Jekyll and Hyde” type. Said the co-worker, “Usually he was just a cool guy . . . When dude snapped, he snapped.” According to The Daily News, Zimmerman earned between $50 and $100 per party, and was fired for being too aggressive with the customers, even, at one point, picking up a woman and throwing her in a rage. “He had a temper and he became a liability,” the former co-worker noted.
Efforts by the right, including Sean Hannity, Bill O’Reilly, Laura Ingraham, Michelle Malkin and others, to paint Zimmerman as a victim of a thuggish teenager have largely failed. Contrary to the yappers in Zimmerman’s camp that Zimmerman fought for his life against Trayvon, the video of Zimmerman on the night of the shooting shows no injuries; in 2005 Zimmerman was arrested for resisting arrest and assaulting a law enforcement officer (charges later dropped); in 2005 Zimmerman was involved in a domestic with his ex-fiancee, and had a restraining order filed against him; prior to that, this same ex-fiancee accused Zimmerman of attacking her during a drive to a counseling session, repeatedly hitting her in the face; she also said that in 2002, Zimmerman had become enraged and thrown her on the bed and hit her; in 2003, Zimmerman accused a motorist of spitting on him, and followed him in his car until the police arrived – the other drive accused Zimmerman of tailgating, and said he thought Zimmerman was going to attack him.
And Zimmerman’s vigilante activities in the gated community where he shot and killed Trayvon Martin were not always welcome; one homeowner had contacted the Sanford Police Department about Zimmerman “approaching him and coming to his home.” Another homeowner told the Huffington Post, “It was also made known that there had been several complaints about George Zimmerman and his tactics” in his self-appointed role as neighborhood watch captain.
While conservative hate-monger and race-baiter Ann Coulter compares critics of George Zimmerman to the KKK and accuses critics of Zimmerman of being a “lynch mob,” and Laura Ingraham screws up her brow and worries about an “innocent person” – namely, George Zimmerman, and the pack of liars that comprise his entourage – being harmed as a result of what she deems nothing but a left-wing frenzy, they might want to consider that an “innocent person” has already been hurt – killed, in fact, by the guy in a suit and tie who most likely gunned down an unarmed kid without provocation.
