One shot in the dark can open doors you’ve only dreamed of…just ask Callaghan. It wasn’t long ago she was writing and recording music in her native UK. Classically trained on flute and self-taught on piano and guitar, Callaghan began writing music at a young age. Monday through Fridays were dedicated to school, and weekends were designed for the 100 mile drive to the recording studio in London.
One of the first albums Callaghan bought was Shawn Mullins’ Soul’s Core. His style influenced her own song writing. In fact, it was Mullins’ multiple self-produced albums and musical style that led Callaghan to make her lucky shot in the dark. She sent a message to him via MySpace. Two weeks later, a shocked and ecstatic Callaghan got the response of her dreams…Mullins had emailed back.
Uncertain of where the journey would lead her, Callaghan took time off from work, got on a plane, and flew to Atlanta to work with Mullins on an agreed-upon 3 song plan. Returning to the UK where her music got radio play, Callaghan knew the duo had to finish the album. So off to Atlanta she flew again. Throughout the course of their time together – not to mention 4 tours – Callaghan has learned the patience required throughout the song writing process. She has watched and learned how a true professional relates to the audience, telling stories and creating a relaxed ambience. Those are traits she is working to perfect. Those are the lessons she has learned from her mentor.
With her album Life in Full Colour recorded, it was only natural the song that captured the spirit of her journey would be the first single, Best Year http://www.callaghansongs.com/video.cfm . The essence of the album is life experience, the highs, the lows, falling in love, falling out of love.
Playing in 25 states, in venues like Eddie’s Attic and the 30A Songwriter’s Festival, Callaghan has seen the fans gather and grow.
So the woman behind the angelic voice is also the woman who dreams of collaborating with Elton John, the woman who likes to kick butt at the gym, and the woman who loves to bake desserts. Callaghan is a sweet, gracious, talented woman. She has a gifted mentor in Mullins and a strong support system in her husband. With her eagerness to continue growing as a performer and writer, and her passion for the art, Callaghan is sure to be a name you hear more of in the coming months.
