If you go to their home page ( http://arelyfrenchbakery.com/ ) you can see that they contend they’re “… an Exquisite French Cafe,… Arely French Bakery is a quiet, warm feeling cafe where you feel like home.” As for exquisite, well let’s just leave it at their shop is functional.
Located at 4961 Clairemont Dr, you’ll find a shopping center with a great many good shops offering goods and services galore. Nancy wants to go back to shop again because there are some really good stores there. I wandered into Arely French Bakery for a look and a taste because it was getting close to lunch time.
On the sidewalk there were a couple of tables with a few chairs if you wanted alfresco dining, but the view was a shopping center parking lot, nothing more. Inside was a small bakery with showcase and a couple of small tables for when alfresco won’t do.
They work pretty hard there, opening Monday – Saturday from 7:30 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. and even at the lunch hour their showcase was well stocked with pastries and cakes. Croissants gleamed at me through the glass, big and proud. They seemed buttery and rich. I saw chocolate croissants, turnovers, cinnamon twists, muffins, scones and plenty of cookies.
I bought some cookies and ate them at home. They were really good. I wished I’d purchased other desserts. They had chocolate mousse cake, tiramisu, crème puffs, éclairs, cheesecake and much more.
Here’s my bottom line on Arely French Bakery: Don’t go looking for a quiet, warm feeling cafe where you can dine in a beautiful alfresco setting with a sweetheart, sipping wine and enjoying a wedge of cheese and great bread.
Go there if you want good pastries, cookies, cakes because they’ve got very good delights. I ate a fine lunch consisting of a pastrami Panini with Swiss cheese, tomato, basil, olives and the pastrami was my kind of meat… I like my pastrami when it looks like typical American bacon – with lots of flavorful fat adorning it. I manage to eat this dish maybe once a year so as to not clog my arteries permanently. Nancy had the croissant turkey with Swiss cheese, tomato, lettuce and mayo. It was delightful.
I’ll gladly eat there again next time we shop at the T.J. Maxx in Clairemont. It is great food and an all around excellent bakery.
