Every Friday there are new movies released in theaters across the country, and many of these new movies are released in over 2,500 theaters, making them ubiquitous and ultimately not so special. But there are also those small movies, the ones that opened up in “select cities” weeks ago – which usually means New York and LA and occasionally Chicago – and take a little longer to play in your local theaters. So when one of these movies do end up playing in your town, it can definitely be something special, and you may only have a week or two to take advantage of the opportunity, so you have to jump on that chance and see these smaller movies, help give the little guy a fighting chance against these blockbuster behemoths. Do them and yourself a favor and check out:
Playing at the Enzian Theater (The Best Little Art House Cinema in Florida), Footnote is a story about a father and son, both professors in the same area of expertise, and their professional rivalry and how it affects their personal relationship. A 2012 nominee for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, Footnote is currently scheduled to play at the Enzian through May 3rd, so if you are interested in this flick, you should make sure you get to the theater and soon.
Still playing around town a.k.a. The Stragglers
Still playing at the Regal Winter Park Village 20 and the AMC Downtown Disney 24 (and a full day of screenings at each location), you still have a chance to check out this documentary about how big kids pick on little kids until the little kids kill themselves, and then the school’s administrators are all like, “Hunh? Wha? Well boys will be boys!”
The Raid: Redemption (original review here)
Going from eight theaters in the Orlando-area down to only two theaters, The Raid is getting it’s last hurrah, just in time to be kicked out of the cinemas by the big summer movie season of 2012. But before you see a bunch of derivative and boring action films, get to either the Regal Pointe Orlando Stadium on I-Drive or the UA Seminole Town Center 10 in Sanford to see this kick ass Indonesian movie.
