It is a fact of political life that elected officials get heckled—the higher the position, the more intense the heckling.
Just ask George W. Bush, who once held the record among American presidents for the most—and most vicious—heckling. Bush was booed during his 2005 State of the Union address by Democratic members of Congress and called a fascist by members of the crowd attending a 2008 speech. If he hadn’t been agile enough to dodge them, he would have been struck—twice—by shoes hurled at him by an Iraqi journalist.
Or you could ask the current record holder, Barack Obama. Obama has been heckled by OWS protesters and was called “Antichrist” last September at an L.A. fundraiser. He hasn’t had footwear flung in his direction by a member of the foreign press corps, but he was the recipient of a middle finger by a Russian news anchor.
So why has this president been singled out by hecklers? Because he commits the cardinal sin of standup comedy (the profession for which heckling was invented) of engaging those who disrupt his speeches. The most recent example of this was going head-to-head with an audience member on Thursday, when he spent the better part of a minute ordering a heckler at Ohio State University to “show me some courtesy” and telling the man he was “being rude” and could hold his “own rally.”
The Huffington Post offers up a video of the exchange but conveniently omits the part of the president’s speech that led up to the heckling in which he rails out at Republicans for painting a false picture of the current gasoline crisis as a cynical means to winning votes. But isn’t this precisely what the president has been doing himself on the campaign trail? The entire video is here (h/t Freedom’s Lighthouse).
