John Force Racing’s Robert Hight has some luck on his side going into this weekend’s SummitRacing.com NHRA Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway: he’s not only the event’s defending champion in Funny Car, but he has won the last two events on the 2012 NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series schedule, at Phoenix and Gainesville.
Hight, who also won the event in 2007, knows how lucky he is this season. “It is not that easy to get two wins in a season, so to get two in a row is huge,” said Hight. He’s also realistic about what that means in the long run: “I also look at the fact that we won three races in a row last year and didn’t get the title, so it is too early to get too excited.”
The lone downside of Hight’s 2012 season so far was his early exit at the season-opening NHRA Winternationals in February, where he went in as the number one qualifier and lost in the first round. “That first round loss definitely motivated us,” said Hight. “We were the No. 1 qualifier and to get taken out by the No. 16 qualifier really hurt. We didn’t race smart. We learned from that and luckily we only had a few days to think about it before we got to Phoenix and got back on track.”
The 2009 World Champion knows he has a tough road ahead of him if he wants to become a two-time champ. “This class is as tough as it has ever been,” said Hight. “Only 10 drivers will make the Countdown, so there will be some big names on the outside. Just because we have won two races, that doesn’t guarantee us anything.”
Full Throttle Series qualifying gets underway on Friday, March 30th at 2 p.m. PT, with second-round qualifying at 4:30 p.m. PT. Saturday, March 31st will feature the final two rounds of qualifying at 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. PT. On Sunday, April 1st, eliminations begin at 11 a.m. PT.
